Understanding how cisplatin-induced ototoxicity occurs

Cisplatin-induced ototoxicity is characterized by the production of toxic levels of reactive oxygen species within the cochlea, resulting in the destruction of cochlear hair cells and damage to the stria vascularis and spiral ganglion cells
Once cochlear hair cells are destroyed, they cannot grow back1
This damage is generally dose dependent, bilateral (affecting both sides), and irreversible
The resulting hearing loss can also be accompanied by tinnitus and vertigo.
This pharmaceutical, Pedmark, is now FFA approved for Cisplatin/chemo-induced hearing loss for ages 0-18 years old.

I have no insights whether Pedmark is otoprotective for adults and for other medications besides Cisplatin. I theorize it should work for other ototoxic medications too but they trialed it for Cisplatin as it is better to trial it for one medication at a time. I also have no insights if it can prevent hearing loss from noise, nor do I know the mechanism of action.

Very interesting to see something actually reached the market in the otoprotective range.

Why can't it just help with people who already have tinnitus :banghead:

But hey at least something finally made it to market. Dr. Susan Shore is hopefully next.
