Does anyone have hyperacusis without tinnitus?
According to some of the literature, around 80-90% of all hyperacusis patients also reports tinnitus and only around 40% of tinnitus patients also reports hyperacusis (source: https://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pmc/articles/PMC5654244/).

However, the brazilian study on LDL among tinnitus patients (which there is a thread about here somewhere) showed lower LDLs in all of the subjects in the T group which suggests that probably everyone with tinnitus actually have hyperacusis too. This goes hand in hand with Dr. Richard Salvi's theory that everyone with T also have H but most T patients have it in such a mild form that they are unaware of it. In theory, this means that it actually should be more rare to have T without H than H without T even though the numbers in the literature says otherwise.

thanks.

Did you have any hearing loss at that time or do you know?

No, I had perfect hearing, actually when in a group or a restaurant I could follow like 4 conversations at the same time, listen everything around and understanding speech and sound from different sources.

To be more precise, I have little to no tinnitus. After my noise trauma, I started with worrisome tinnitus, then the hyperacusis appeared 2 months later. Since then, 24 years, I have never been really bothered by tinnitus luckily!

I had Tinnitus, quite bad for the first few months after my acoustic shock from exposing my ears to stupidly loud music at a nightclub a few years ago. But it gradually faded after a few months to the point where I only occasionally hear it now at a very low level, and usually those times are triggered by lack of sleep or stress.
So for all intents and purposes I don't have Tinnitus anymore but Hyperacusis I've had from the start, although it also reduced by perhaps 20% a few months after my exposure, but no improvement since and it's been a few years.
I also developed what appears to be TTTS (mostly in my left ear) shortly after the incident and it too hasn't really improved but with both the H and TTTS I've learned to live with them to a degree. Lack of sleep and poor diet seems to slightly worsen both so I try to watch that end of things and various supplements like NAC and Curcurmin seem to take the edge off it a little bit so I take both of those regularly.

I have hyperacusis but not tinnitus.. Or I should say I have a mild tinnitus that can be heard if I concentrate on it.
The tinnitus sometimes spikes but it soon fades away with a couple of hours. So I don't suffer from tinnitus but with hyperacusis.

Hi @victoria9273

Long time no see. Hope you are keeping.Hyperacusis can improve by itself. When this doesn't happen specialist treatment may be required by wearing white noise generators to help desensitise the auditory system. Some people are of the belief, wearing white noise generators alone will treat hyperacusis. Unfortunately, this isn't always so. Counselling with a Hearing Therapist or Audiologist is usually required, due to the way hyperacusis and tinnitus affects a person's mental and emotional wellbeing. Some people think hyperacusis and tinnitus are just physical problems, again this isn't the case.

Take care
Michael

Hi, Michael Leigh, thank you for your warm welcome. Looking back, and to this day, I think my hyperacusis is gradually getting better. But the healing process is extremely, almost unnoticeably slow. One has to endure it and always take care of their conditions. That's all I can say now, for sure.

Very true Victoria, you must do things at your own pace. If you are able to use earplugs less or use less attenuation on earplugs if you use them? For instance, instead of using 25 or 30 decibel reduction try 18 decibels this will enable your auditory system to receive a higher level of sound. As I have suggested in my post: Hyperacusis, As I see it. One should try and not get used to wearing earplugs too often especially to reduce normal everyday sounds.

If you can immerse yourself (not literally) with more sound enrichment this I feel would help with desensitising your auditory system and hopefully improve the hyperacusis. However, in the last analysis you must trust yourself and do things at your own pace.

Take care
Michael

I didn't quite get you. So you had worrisome tinnitus, but no tinnitus now? Did it improve after all those years or did you habituate? If it did improve, after how long?
