Poll: Does Your Dog's Barking Annoy or Spike Your Tinnitus?

Hi,

After reading and helping on a recent thread, it's got me thinking.

To all the dog owners on here, does your dog's bark annoy or spike your tinnitus?

Please reply once you have voted as I'd like to know how many are small/medium/large dogs.

My vote is no. My Bernese's barking has never spiked my tinnitus and it doesn't hurt my ears either but at the same time he's not very vocal.

It annoys me, and I definitely try to avoid it, but so far it has not caused any spike. It's a medium sized dog:

Is he/she a cross? Looks similar to a Golden Retriever or Nova Scotia Duck Tolling Retriever.

Does your dog bark a lot?

Mine hardly barks, he only barks when there's someone at the door, the rest of the time he talks to me by making funny noises but they're not loud.

Yes it's a cross. Half Golden Retriever, half Brittany dog.

He barks in the same situation: when there is someone at the door. And also when he sees someone just in front of the house. I find it's a real pain because I really hate loud noises now but I can't really blame him

Although, if one day I buy another dog I will take a bigger one, so that the barking's pitch is lower.

Thought he had part Golden in there (my hobby is reading on different dog breeds). Goldens are one of the more quiet breeds plus they are super easy to train (sorry I just love Goldens)

I'm just glad that my dog doesn't bark much and any future dogs I own I would only ever pick either quiet breeds or quieter breeds like the Bernese but ones who are easy to train like the Golden. They only bark for a reason but as they are easy to train, training doesn't take as long.

Oh ? I think I have read somewhere that the Golden Retriever is the loudest dog breed Not sure how reliable it was though.
But anyway, I love them too

Don't know about loudest but in terms of barking they are that vocal overall.

I have two Pomeranians and both like to bark quite a bit specially when I come home from work or my husband comes home for work. Their barks do not bother me in the slightest. They are my babies! <3

I measured my Bernese's bark once and it was 95 dB but his bark even that loud has not once caused a spike and it doesn't hurt my ears either which I'm glad about, but I have always wondered why this is as you would think being exposed to a dog bark at 95 dB would cause a spike? I have always wondered if the reason I have never had a spike is to do with what @Michael Leigh told about sound enrichment as a dog bark I would think would be classed as a normal sound even nature sound and our ears would know what a dog bark is if that makes any sense.

The only dog barks that hurt my ears and the only time my tinnitus has spiked is when I'm around small dogs. Poms, westies, yorkies, shih tzus, etc cause my tinnitus to spike. It always goes back down but for that reason I could never have a small dog.

However when I'm around pugs or frenchies (french bulldog) my tinnitus doesn't spike.

Recently I have spent time with a rough collie (I love them and would love one but due to tinnitus could never have one). When the collie barked my tinnitus went louder and my ears hurt just like when I'm around poms etc. Which then I realised my tinnitus reacts to high pitch barking. Deeper barks don't bother my ears.

So i could not onw any breed who has a high pitched bark.

Not totally sure, some pit, some blue heeler, maybe a lab somewhere in her ancestry. She is very old, almost 15.

@Sarah200 In the very beginning their barks bothered me some. I think I had H but I know longer feel I have that. If I am on the floor playing with them and they start to bark it can hurt my ears. But that was the case before tinnitus and it also has hurt my husbands ears and he does not have tinnitus. I believe its because of the frequency. I grew up with German Shepherds and their barks are much louder but not nearly as high pitched.

I know all about German Shepherds. I lost mine last year. His bark was loud and again never bothered my ears or tinnitus, but he barked a lot more than my Bernie.

My grandmother has a Yorkshire and it makes a very high pitched piercing noise that I find unbearable. I could not live with a dog like this.

Me too @Julien87. Only high pitched barks cause a problem for my ears. Deeper barks are fine.

Same here. So many small dogs i would love to own but their barks are high pitched which hurts my ears, pugs have a deeper bark due to their shorter noses and their bark is fine with my ears. But i could never own a flat faced breed (my personal opinion) but they are so cute and have fantastic temperaments. I wonder if puggles have deeper barks (pug cross beagle).

So I was suppose to get a Cavoodle/Cavapoo next week and ended up getting the deposit back. I went up to my friends house on Sunday to meet her dog. Shiz Tzu X Maltese. I have never heard a dog so high pitched in barking in my life. It was horrific, thankfully I had double protection on but even then I was extremly uncomfortable, to the point I cancelled my dog because I was scared it would have the same high pitched bark. 20 minutes that dog barked at me. I couldnt deal with it. I have a feeling it may of spiked my tinnitus or I might be think it did no idea. I feel like its ruined me for dogs.

I was suppose to go look at a Pug tomorrow but now im to scared.

Ive never had a spike with my dog barking, I know barks can sometimes be loud but you can teach them humanly not to bark. It's takes a lot of patience but it's worth it.

I was out on a walk and some other dogs barked which provoked mine to bark. I have trained her not to bark but there were quite a few dogs and she got excited. It didn't last long but I am still worried.

I should have put plugs in.

People say your t can fade but how can it fade when it can spike randomly or from normal sounds like these?!?

It can fade and does for a lot of people, I know a group of dogs all going crazy could be loud but hopefully the spike will be a combination of the noise and your anxiety. If you go for a walk again just keep your plugs or earmuffs in and listen to your body, if you feel uncomfortable leave.

I'm sure the spike will fade and doesn't mean you have messed up your ears even more so.
