I am having one now. Terrible. Started after seeing the new star wars with alpine white filter party plugs in. Woke up the next day with severe spike. It's Thursday night and it hasn't changed. Hoping it goes back down. My Tinnitus has always been unmaskanle and loud but this is terrible. I'll come back and post if it goes back down or changes back to the prior sound. Started taking zzzquil pure zz's to sleep. So so loud. I've had it go back before but only after taking steroids. Gonna take 20 grams of taurine a day for awhile see if it helps. Have taken 8 grams today.

How do tinnitus spikes sound like?

They can range from being louder to have new tone, altered pitch. I'd say, spikes are basically temporary increase in severity of tinnitus. Some have clear causes like an additional noise trauma, medication, illness, some come out of the blue. Correct me, if I'm wrong.

Checking back in as promised.
My spike finally went down :) Thank you Lord.
The spike lasted 2 weeks.
I did up my taurine to 20 grams a day, 10 grams in the morning and 10 grams at night for the last week.
After I started that regiment, on the 3rd day my spike disappeared. I also started taking L-Theanine for the first time ever 4 days ago. 300mg dose at night with 3mg of meletonin (been taking meletonin for a year now just added L-Theanine to help sleep.) Slept for 10 hours 2 days in a row also, seemed to really help.
I weigh roughly 190lbs and don't take any prescription meds.
Tinnitus is actually lower than my base was before the spike. I'm happy but I know better than to think it will stay this way. Going to go down to 3 grams of taurine a day starting tomorrow and see if it changes.
Kinda scary taking 20 grams of anything a day.
PS. I'm done going to the theater to see movies. It's just NOT worth the risk.

Mine lasts for less than 5 seconds and then go back to normal. I have tinnitus in my right ear but have also had a loud spike go off in my left ear as well. Do you all know why we get spikes? I normally get a spike once a month but now that I have started a regimen, I have had 3 spikes in 6 days. Not sure if that is a sign that my brain is trying to fix itself...

All my regimen has been is:

—A glass of warm water with 1 tablespoon of apple cider vinegar - 2x a day (morning and night)
—Drug free nasal spray - 1x a day (in morning) followed by valsalva maneuver
—Breathing steam through nose - 1x a day (in morning)

Sorry to re-awken this discussion after so long, but...

I'm suffering from a major spike in my tinnitus which has lasted for just over a week now and follows a weekend of stupidity, clubbing 2 days in a row with friends while away for the weekend. My usual varying high pitch in my right ear is now a continuous ring and my brain background noise is very elevated.

How do you know if a spike is permanent or just a temporary elevation?

It sounds like someone has cranked my background sound right up and im not getting much sleep & suffering major anxiety from this. I normally sleep with quiet music in the background but now can only sleep on one side and have to have my sound machine on the next setting.

Do these things often go down again and how long can it take, or do i have to wait to habituate to this new sound? I'm a little worried :(

I voted hours, but in reality for me they last seconds.

The longest spike I had was about two minutes long and it felt like being new to tinnitus all over again.

I can't imagine having a spike that lasts days or weeks.

@Nick116, some spikes last days some last months. It depends on the person and what caused the spike. I had my doggy barked in my ear and the spike lasted seconds... and I've had other situations where it took months to go back to base. Unfortunately, other times, the spike never settled. :(

Rest your ears and stay away from noise. Hopefully it will settle soon.

I recommend you stay away from clubbing.

My spikes usually last for months, and I've been having bad/severe tinnitus for the past 10 months. The worst one lasted about 4 months. Currently going through one without a clear cause...
