Cause of Tinnitus
Uncertain, now very somatic, started with noise?
I am a little surprised that many tinnitus sufferers seem to be unsure about the cause...
And I like to have data;)

Dear reader and tinnitus-sufferer!
Please be so kind and make a simple cross at your opinion.
I am interested in the question, whether most of tinnitus-sufferer are sure, whether noise is the reason....

hearing loss and noise-induced is not the same....
Sorry, I just saw the word noise and my brain immediately jumped to hearing loss. Of course hearing loss and noise-induced aren't the same! Mine was definitely caused by noise.

Good question, so i'm wondering if spikes are caused by different things for people who got T from noise exposure versus ototoxic medications and in my case, i know my T was caused by a sulfur antibiotic and i experience big spikes when consuming moderate to high salicylate or high salt foods, so i'm wondering if people who got T from noise exposure also get spikes from salicylate and salt foods?

65 votes, thank you very much.
There is a tendency that about one-third of the tinnitus is attributed to noise trauma, one-third to something else, and one-third are uncertain about the cause.

It is actually unacceptable that medicine cannot tell us whether our tinnitus ears are noise-damaged or not.
About a third of the voter are unsure, whether they have a noise-damage or not.

There are two reasons for the importance of knowing the cause of tinnitus:
a) Possible treatment would be different
b) Dealing with noise would be different
In my opinion, it makes no sense to protect oneself from normal noise if noise was not the cause of tinnitus.

I am 100% sure it was noise. I was on a conference call and I didn't realize my phone was set to speaker phone. I put the phone to my ear and feedback (caused by the facilitator having difficulty setting up the call) blasted into my left ear. That was over two years ago and the ringing has never stopped.

Very mild T since around 1994 (Probably because of car stereo speaker too close to left ear). Way worse T since a Bruce Springsteen concert 1999. Now worse again (though still hoping) from a too loud party - despite ear plugs - three weeks ago.

Definitely loud noise.

I had problems before tinnitus. Which leads me to believe it is all connected. However, I did watch Dunkirk at the cinema not long before I heard ringing and then I got a ear infection three months after that. I am clueless as to the cause to be honest.

About 21% of all people suffering from tinnitus are certain that noise does not play a role in their suffering. This is understandable if there was no noise event.
About 38% of all tinnitus sufferers are certain that noise has caused their tinnitus. This is, of course, immediately understandable if tinnitus began, for example, in connection with a noise event.
Approx. 40%! suspect a noise event, - but do not know exactly whether it is the cause!
This is actually an incredible result...

Why would it be important to know the cause?
If noise is absolutely certain to be the cause of tinnitus, it may make sense to protect yourself more than the normal population.

All kinds of somatic therapy, e.g. atlas correction, osteopathy, CMD therapy etc. are then basically illogical.

The observation of a pulsatile character of tinnitus does not really need attention either.

Unsure, since it started immediately during a cold, a month after a head trauma from a car crash. But who knows, i went clubbing often in my younger years, and i also used headphones.

In any case i treat it like noise induced.

Noise for me. It was a very short duration acoustic trauma (acoustic blast trauma) caused by a careless coworker.

noise induced tinnitus guarantees hearing loss.

I don't see how noise induced hearing loss wont be cured from restoring hair cells and synapses.

To say otherwise is to believe that the noise (excess stimulation) causes other nerve changes. If so, how come shocking yourself with a tazer doesn't induced phantom limb sensation? That is certainly major excess stimulation.

I think for those of us with hearing loss induced tinnitus that restoring the hair cells and the ribbon synapses will immediately cure the tinnitus as soon as the cells fully grow and reconnect.

im more concerned on how difficult it will be to repair functional hair cells/synapses. i'm extremely skeptical at this daunting task, so many bio-logical complicaitons exist when it comes to regenerative medicine, repairing cochlear hair cells and ribbon synapses, and you seem to consider it a walk in the park. That is why ed209 called you out mostly because we don't know what the hell is going to happen by December, let alone the shit that is going to do down in stage 2 or 3 trials.

By stage 2 of the trial that is when serious questions are going to be asked and answered such as effects on tinnitus and noxacusis, but right now we do not have sufficient information about Frequency Therapeutics trial and speculation is just a waste of time.

once again I really really hope this trial succeeds and the FDA does super fast track it, but their is a lot at stake and this is how science works.

no offense to your optimism, and I hope all is well with you.

based on cochlear implants tinnitus fades a month or several after hearing is restored, but usually there is a immediate decrease due to more hearing.

The reason I believe curing hearing loss will cure tinnitus is because cochlear implants reduce tinnitus, and all evidence is pointing to tinnitus being a phantom auditory sensation caused by lack of input to the auditory brain.
