I don't understand how tinnitus sufferers can wear earplugs in the house or in bed to sleep, because my perception of tinnitus increases to insane levels when my ears are plugged. Hence, the poll. I'm genuinely curious if this is normal.

Since tinnitus is internally perceived, it makes sense to me that it would become louder with earplugs. I can barely last five minutes in a quiet room with them. I only wear earplugs in noisy environments, as my already severe tinnitus becomes unbearable otherwise.

Same here. The noise is in my ears and head. Isolation seems to heighten my awareness of it. However, I imagine those with hyperacusis or noise sensitivity may have an entirely different experience.
