Cause of Tinnitus
Hearing Loss / Stress
I know Tinnitus varies from person to person and it can be auditory related or brain related or something completely different. I'm looking to find others with similar T as mine.

Does your T go away if you do one of these things:
  • Put on protective head phones (i.e. the yard work or power tool kind)
  • Put in ear plugs
  • Cup your hands over your ears or simply plug your ears with your hands
If your T dissipates significantly or disappears completely, please post here.
If your T gets worse or stays the same by removing external sounds, your T is different and I am sorry. My coworker falls into this category and his T is brain related.

I have hearing loss at 8,000 hertz and above. My hearing is great otherwise and better than normal at lower frequencies according to my audiogram. My ENT suspects this is why I have T which started in 10/2016 but he also said I probably had my level of hearing loss for a long time.

I am just looking for people with a similar story who can quiet their T by covering their ears where the T is most likely auditory related. Maybe your ENT told you something else but I would be interested in hearing it. Maybe you've also found success if stopping or reducing the T permanently. I'm not referring to habituation, I know what that is and working on it one day at a time.

Meanwhile, I will be following the Frequency Therapeutics thread and hoping to read more promising news on repairing stereocilia from sea anemone proteins. Basically, anything that successfully helps restore hearing or reduces T.

I feel my T is hearing loss related and was possibly induced by stress. Around the time it started, I had several things stressing me out:

  • Building a custom house and stressing over when our move in date would be. It had been almost a year since we closed on the construction loan and our builder (my wife's uncle) originally told us it would take 6 to 8 months. On top of the house taking longer than expected, costs were adding up. For example, we were told landscaping would cost $10k by the builder but when the first landscaper guy came out, he gave us an estimate of $37k.
  • My oldest daughter in kindergarten and various issues there. One day another 5 year old threatened to kill her and it was a big deal at school. Two other separate occasions involved a different boy telling her if she pulled down her underpants, he would let her come to his house. Never in a million years would I have expected these things in Kindergarten. Crazy 5 year olds!
  • In addition to building a house, we were planning on renting out our current house. The rental should help pay for the mortgage on the new house so I was stressed about finding the right client and we were exclusively searching for ex-pats.
  • A big project at work where I was coding a model for a client. I remember testing some code and it didn't do what I wanted it to do so I slammed my laptop cover down out of frustration.
I also remember around this time I had a few occasions where I heard some popping or clicking in my right ear. Everything I read said this is related to hearing loss. We visited the construction site a few times and I remember one time I was standing right next to a large compressor outside when it went off. It was loud but I didn't think much of it at the time. Now I wonder if it helped put me over the top to be cursed with this terrible static in my ears.

My audiologist also gave me a chuckle saying I was definitely not a candidate for a hearing aid. I've read that has helped some people with T but I guess their hearing loss is more profound than mine. I only have it at high frequencies of 8,000 hertz and up.

You mean after you remove your earplugs, the T goes? Or during? I never heard of anyone not hearing his T with earplugs.

My tinnitus never stops and varies from day to day. No matter how bad though, it no longer bothers me. Even on the days when it sounds like someone is screaming in my ear, it no longer has an impacts on me emotionally. This may change, however, and reflects a snapshot of the here and now.

I've found that I don't really 'hear it' hear it. My perception doesn't really tune into it even though it's there, and my tinnitus is not mild. It used to be that I went in and out of these phases, but it's been solid for quite a while now, so it's likely my long term outlook as far as tinnitus goes.

I reached this stage by stopping my fight against it and just letting it be. My brain got bored with it and no longer puts it front and centre of my active consciousness, which is where it was since it got worse; all day, every second.

What I've got now is as good as silence in many respects.

I tried ear plugs and didn't like them. If I place ear muffs like the ones in this picture on my head, my T goes away almost completely while they are on me. Take them off and the T returns.

Is it possible this is some form of pressure issue? What did the doctor tell you? Do you hear it during the day?

I don't know if its pressure related or not.

ENT #1 said he thought it was stress related but asked if I could also hear my heartbeat which I cannot. He said I have excellent hearing (and better than normal for frequencies below 8k) but moderate to severe loss at 8k hertz.

ENT #2 said he thought it was hearing loss related and inquired about an acoustic neuroma. I have symetric\bilateral hearing loss so he felt that was not the answer either. They confirmed the results from my hearing test from the first ENT trip.

How would my case relate to pressure?
