I just read that about 20 % (!) of people who are treated with steroids get diabetes, this is usually temporary and should pass once treatment is stopped, but for some cases it might be permanent https://www.medicalnewstoday.com/articles/317015.php

Are the short but very high doses that people usually take for ear related problems a risk factor?

I got this when taking steroids for my tinnitus. I didn't realize it at the time. I would drink water and have go to the restroom 10 minutes later. My blood sugar was off the charts and my body was trying to flush out the sugar but it was also dehydrating me. After stopping the steroids I was fine, but couldn't take them again.

What I learned is that steroids reduces the efficacy of insulin. So your insulin cannot do its job of transporting the sugar from your blood as well as it should.
