Tinnitus Talk submitted a new resource:

Prevention of Noise-induced Damage by Use of Antioxidants (version 1.0) - To verify the preventive effect of antioxidants on noise-induced hearing loss and tinnitus.

The current study is a double-blinde placebo-controlled cross-over study verifying the preventive effect of antioxidants on noise-induced hearing loss (NIHL) and noise-induced tinnitus (NIT). The antioxidants comprise of a mixture of magnesium and n-acetylcystein which should be taken 1h before leisure noise above 100dB for at least 30 minutes.

Estimated Enrollment: 30

Who would sign up for something like this?

Go to a rock concert: just replace the XTC pils with magnesium pils.....You will get rich and have a clinical trial....

something with a couple of birds and a stone....;)

Scheduled to be completed in April, 2014, the trial's results should be published soon.

If the antioxidants are effective, they will provide a cheap and easy to obtain prophylactic treatment before exposure to loud noises. All tinnitus sufferers worry about attending loud events--such as concerts, weddings, parties, etc. If this prophylactic works, they will offer an additional level of protection. I would still wear appropriate hearing protection and limit my time exposure.

Here is specific information about the trial:

This study proposes a randomized, double-blind, placebo-controlled crossover trial. Participants need to spend at least 3 consecutive hours in an environment where loud music is played (>95 dB(A)) after taking either a combination of antioxidants (NAC and Mg2+) or a placebo, 1 hour prior to noise exposure. Each participant needs to repeat this procedure four times (interval between trials at least 4 days) and each participant will receive twice the antioxidants as well as the placebo. This study aims to investigate the combined effects of NAC and Mg2+ by use of four repeated treatments on the hearing of noise-exposed young adults.

The dosages are NAC (600 mg) and magnesium (200 mg).

I can tell you about the results right now: I take between 500 and 1K mg of magnesium daily and at least 500 mg of NAC daily as routine with my health supplements, not part of any study. Been doing this for over a year...tinnitus continues unabated...nuff said!

I did a search today, once again I did not manage to find the results.
I just realized that the contact of the trial did not reply to me. Honestly, I don't know what to do.
