Putting Dr. Rauschecker on Joe Rogan

Hello everyone,

As I listened to the Tinnitus Talk Podcast tonight, which was amazing by the way, it dawned on me what would be a huge help to Dr. Rauschecker's campaign. What if he was able to be in Joe Rogan's podcast. It is arguably one of the most listened to podcasts out there, and beyond the fundraiser, it would bring a HUGE amount of awareness to tinnitus.

Joe loves to speak with neurologists and is very interested in scientific research that revolves around cognitive disorders (which Rauschecker is an expert on).

So, I am proposing we try to get Dr. Rauschecker on Joe's podcast. On his podcast website, you can send a contact message to book a guest. If anyone knows of a better way to try and contact Joe, I would be all ears, but I think if we can contact Dr. Rauschecker and Rogan, then maybe it's possible we can make it happen.

Does anyone have any thoughts on this idea? I would love to start a discussion on how to make this happen, as I believe his podcast would raise an immense amount of attention.

I do agree that it would benefit the cause but Joe Rogan is very particular about his guests. I don't think talking about tinnitus for 4 hours would be very interesting to the average person. Also Joe Rogan probably doesn't find that illness interesting enough to bring an expert.

Don't get me wrong, I would like nothing more than for him to be on there, but I feel that it wouldn't happen.

What about finding another show/media channel?

I don´t know this particular show, but I ask myself what could be more interesting than hearing about a disorder that 5-10% of the worlds population is affected by - in various degrees of seriousness. Talking for four hours will perhaps be too much. Or perhaps not - we should explore all possibilities and keep the right mindset that we need - we need to be "information-entrepreneurs" going forward.

I think Rauschecker will have easier access to shows and media attention once his group have more evidence from their primate research, but this should be is no excuse for us to pause our efforts in raising awareness. We could accelerate this process by raising awareness and funding.

I really think just the story of tinnitus is has a big power in itself: wrt how many are affected worldwide, wrt how it is a hidden disorder, wrt that no-one has a cure, by just explaining it in the right way and to the right people. This story is very powerful with the potential to move people when told in the right way.

I love the Joe Rogan podcast, personally, as I like MMA and the banter is good. However, I don't think Prof Rauschecker is a good fit as he would be delivering a very scientific message. What if they start ripping on him in a humorous way? I know Joe wouldn't say anything derogatory, but most of his guests know the score, and they know what the language and vibe is gonna be like.

Personally, I think Prof Rauschecker would rather appear on a serious, scientific podcast, where they are prepared to talk in detail with a more formal tone.

Maybe I'm wrong though.

Yea, I've always been a fan of boxing and martial arts. I've followed MMA from right back in the early days before it became popular (UFC).

His audience is more MMA and hunting focused, but he does have a lot of neuroscientists and other clinicians on often. I think Rauschecker's primate studies would still fascinate Joe.

I'll still send a message to his manager, but even if not for Joe's podcast, any major podcast would benefit our cause.

Look how much the TED Talk helped. A large platform like that could be good :)

I'm a big fan of martial arts. I did kyokushin for several years (the main discipline of GSP) and I really love this. Tried bjj also but I prefer stand up fighting.
When it comes to MMA I really admire Fedor, Cro Cop and Machida.

That's awesome, Julien. When I was a kid I wanted to do martial arts more than anything else but it never materialised for me. When UFC first started in the early 90's, nobody really knew what would happen and/or what styles would emerge as being legit and useable. It turns out that they are primarily: BJJ, wrestling, kickboxing/Muay Thai, some Karate styles, and little else. I think the Gracies knew exactly what they were doing when they organised those early UFC tournaments.

There's a lot of talent about nowadays and there are some great legends from the past. Jon Jones could have been one of the greatest, but all these drug scandals have tarnished his legacy in my opinion. GSP was a beast, and so was Matt Hughes. There are and have been so many great fighters over the years.

Fedor and Cro Cop are awesome. I'm looking forward to seeing Khabib fight again, but would rather see him fight Tony Ferguson.

No idea! I only saw a few of his fights.
And yeah Jon Jones was very close to the legend status. Quite arrogant though, I generally prefer more humble fighters ^^

I believe Dana White has suffered from Meniere's and tinnitus so there is at least a somewhat personal connection there that could provide some relevance. Perhaps they could be ones to consider if not the podcast but for some other advocacy efforts.

It's a great idea. Better if Dr. Rauschecker discusses hearing loss in general and T as a side effect. It may open up the possibilities. I didn't even know the podcast existed. Thanks.

Great idea. Sort of a counter point to Susan Shore. I heard her on Science Friday. She was asked if she thought tinnitus can be cured. She completely side stepped the issue by replying that it can be prevented.

Also Science Friday might be a good place for a discussion about hair cell regeneration.

Oh yeah, didn't Joe Rogan also interview a couple of rock stars?

Because...

You should forward this to some really rich rock stars who are known to donate (or do beneficial concerts) for such things.

I am pretty sure a good deal of them have enough personal experience with the affliction to be really interested in putting their money there ;)
