Cause of Tinnitus
Loud noise
Hi. I've had tinnitus for about 5 years, and it doesn't really bother me now. However, in the ear that has tinnitus, something odd has begun to happen.

There's a low pitch rumble that lasts a few seconds at a time. I know tinnitus can be all types of sounds. But this I can feel. I'm certain it's mechanical, as I can actually feel it in my ear. It's very hard to explain. And it isn't all the time. But it seems to come in waves of an hour or so, every few hours!

I just wondered if anyone else experienced this?

I have a low rumble too, but it seems to be cued off of my heart beat. It varies based on the head position too.

I have this as well and like yours mine comes and goes too. Sometimes gone for a week and sometimes lasts a few days to few hours. I just hope it subside over time. Mine is totally related to inflammation.

I get vibrating eardrum sensations sometimes. It comes and goes. It doesnt bother me much. The tinnitus loudness is what bothers me most.

I get also from time to time the same vibrating eardrum, if I distract my self I can ignore it well. Espacially when I'm in bed I hear it constantly.

@BobDigi It's not uncommon among those that have low frequency tinnitus that there's some kind of sensation of vibration with the sound. You can find further discussion from a long thread about low frequency tinnitus.
I actually have very high frequency tinnitus. It's hard to explain but it feels as if something is moving. Weather it be fluid or a piece of the inner ear.

@BobDigi I am experiencing exactly what you explained. Did yours go away?

I'm suffering the same, almost a month now. Basically 24/7 with only brief pauses. Sounds like 65hz low frequency bass type pulse. I can hear and physically feel something vibrating.

Strangely I had this sensation for years, with long gaps in between hearing it and always brief. But it's become basically 24/7 since the day after my grandfather died and I happened to try new molding type of earplugs that triggered it somehow and it's been stuck.

I can't do anything to stop it that I'm aware of. Maybe hot showers calms it down for a bit, but not 100% certain. It changes in intensity based on either getting upset, rubbing the ear, sticking earplugs in, massaging anywhere on the right side. If it becomes more intense it becomes less a half second intermittent hum into one solid sound with no break until it calms back down to the former version.

I also seem to pick up lower freq. sounds easier in the ear, and I notice if I tap around my cheek bone I hear an odd echo/vibration, perhaps an internalized reverberation of the sound of me taping my face translating to the ear.

I used several medical checkers and there's mostly just one reason for this happening. You might be clenching or thrusting your jaw in a protrusive direction. This tightens up the lateral pterygoid muscle which attaches to the cheek bone around the sinus area. This usually is a left side problem and sometimes top and lower teeth do not touch in a resting position.

One exercise is to place tongue to roof of mouth, lips together and teeth apart. Then move tongue to the left and then to the right 10 times or as many times as you want. Jaw thrusting and muscle twitching can be caused from being upset and sounds can also contribute as in link.

I'm also in this boat with tinnitus and anxiety having somatic tinnitus, thumping, bass sounds, vibrations, thyroid interaction, atlantoaxial problems and oral nerve trauma, TMJ and more. My sounds besides having hearing loss is caused by narrowing of my jugular vein, trauma of vertebral artery with association to my atlantoaxial joints and thyroid.

The above is probably secondary to something else that causing your sounds.
Advance testing may be needed, but maybe start with complete blood work and talking to your doctors about a complete venous ultrasound of neck.

Thanks I will bring up the test. I will correct myself that the tapping of the upper cheek is simulating the same sound I already hear in the ear. As for the anxiety, which I no doubt have had for years, it is localized in the ear and not in the head so I'm sure that doesn't probably apply to me.

Now that I've reached a month of this horrible condition which has made me basically home ridden, I've concluded if it's not ETD induced (which I am sadly now suspecting it's not, after trying floanse, antihistamines/decongestant combos, exercises to open the tubes for the last two weeks) it is most likely stapedius muscle spasm. Which I am absolutely terrified. Medications really don't work and from this site at the bottom there indicates a lack of ability to get something localized there to help:

My appointment with a place with supposed top notch neuro ophthalmologist is in 1 months sadly, and I'm struggling to hold on. And the fact this is probably incurable is sinking me into despair.

I still can't process how this is even happening. I've had this off and on for years, briefly and never gave it a second thought. When it first happened in 2015 I believe it did last longer than all the rest (until now) but it was intermittent and usually triggered by doing something, like driving or waking up.

Never progressed or got worse, so for this sudden permanent condition just seems absolutely unreal to me, like I'm not even in reality.

I suspect that because I can make the symptoms worse by rubbing the ear, putting in earplugs, moving around too much, massaging the neck/ear ect., indicates to me that it's probably one of the Muscles. What else could it be. I don't see how Eustachian Tube Dysfunction would be made worse by any of the above, at least in terms of the vibration intensity and loudness. I barely was holding on with my normal T/H and Palinopsia, this has sunk me so far.
