Sea Anemone Proteins May Help 'Restore' Damaged Hearing

Birds and reptiles can restore their hearing. It's good to know they are able to find more animals with this ability.
 
Hmm not quite restoring hair cells though. The article says that the sea anemone proteins only help repair bonds between hair cells that haven't died off yet. So this may be more of a preventative measure if it ever came to market.
 
Yes quite true it clearly states that it might be a treatment for acute damage before the hair cell permanently died ( i think its about 4 to 7 days after trauma)
 
I agree, but lets not forget there is still no certainty what precisely is damaged or even dead in the inner ear after NIHL.
Most of all, this is another opportunity to understand protein repair mechanisms that exist in other species, but not in mammals.
 
Damaged doesn't mean dead. I can hear fine but I bet some of my stereocilia are not at 100%.
I agree, I have horrendous hyperacusis and tinnitus but according to my latest hearing test there's no real measurable loss. 20-1000 Hz is fine and 1000-10,000 Hz is also perfect with a hearing threshold of 17/18 kHz bilaterally. It isn't hair cells that's causing this but the auditory nerve and synapses, mark my words.

Surviving the sonic impact of a giant meteor may have weeded out those who couldn't regenerate from the acoustic blast.
 
If you really doubt that traditional medicine works, eat raw sea anemone and prove that it will not change hearing thresholds or tinnitus volume. You can be the one to disprove my theory.

Why rabbits? Mammals can't regenerate damaged hearing, but birds, reptiles, and sea anemone can. If anything is going to work, it would be sea anemone. They regenerate their hair cells much faster than birds and reptiles.

The cells have to be exposed to the protein.
When you take drugs orally, very few of it actually diffuse across the Blood Labyrinth Barrier (BLB) into the cohlear fluid.

So, the protein that acts on the hair cells represents a very very very small proportion of the total mass of the anemone and then after that only a very very very small proportion of that would cross the BLB and enter the cochlear fluid.

for the drug ly411575, that also regenerates mammalian hair cells, the systemic (oral) dose was 50mg/kg of body mass. For a 150lbs adult that would be about 3.5 grams of the pure anemone protein per day for multiple days. It would probably take many pounds of sea anemone to be able to extract 3.5 grams of that protein, and you would need a complicated chemical process to extract that specific protein anyway. Your best bet would be to apply it locally to the round window membrane of the cochlea via the middle ear, and by it, I mean the pure extracted protein from the anemone.

So no, you cannot eat enough raw sea anemone to make this happen. I just completely shut down your argument so just stop it. You are wrong. You have absolutely no idea what you're talking about. So just stop.

Okay, forget I said you could eat 3.5 grams of this. That was just hypothetical.

Guess what??

When you eat proteins your digestive system breaks them down into amino acids. Therefore none of the anemone proteins would ever even make it to your blood stream let alone across the BLB.
Your body makes its own proteins from the base components of the proteins you eat, and digest.



The argument is completely over at this point.
