Hi Tinnitus Talk members.
Ive have been lurking around this forum for a while now, and tried to find some sort relief on this insane condition, but no luck at all.
Today it has been almost 3 weeks since shit hit the fan. On the day 08-22-2018 I got exposed to very very loud bang. Ive have been metal detecting for a couple of years, mostly searching for things from ww2. One day I came across a very little aluminum thingy, not bigger than the end of a pen. I took it home but then i was just about to go inside my house, I dropped it. It went of causing a fairly loud bang. I got hit by shrapnel all over, including my face and left hand. (almost lost one of my fingertips.) I got very close to loose an eye too. But luckily I didn't.
Anyways. Right after everything was just a blur, I almost couldn't hear anything. But about half an hour later after the medics arrived, my hearing began to come back. It was still very muffled, but now I also had very loud ringing for both my ears. They didn't think any of it at the ER, as they were more focused on my finger and face.
I was send to an ENT the day after, where I had my face examined and ears checked. My eardrums were both a little bruised but not burst. My hearing test showed hearing loss at 4000 Hz. And they said it would be permanent.
Two weeks later. I went to my own ENT where I had another hearing test made. It showed that my hearing was perfect in the normal spectrum. Im sure my hearing is shattered in the 12 kHz - 13 kHz area. But after checking the higher spectrum myself, I could hear it all at a fairly low volume. I know this is not at all a perfect test and not reliable.
I had been protecting my ears all the time after the blast even when I was in my parents' new Mercedes. Which isn't noisy at all. About 40 dB when driving fast on a bad highway.
Anyways skip to today. I have been very down in these couple of weeks. I have tried to stay positive, but it has showed no improvements. I have been prescribed with steroids fairly early less than a week after onset. And i suspect it is the reason why my hearing came back. The thing is not only do I have this very loud tinnitus i can hear over everything. I have it in both ears, my left is very quite in the morning but is the loudest in the evening. My right has a couple of different sounds, one very high pitched sound like hissing, which constantly changes volume. also have a very dentist drill like sound that is not constant but comes and goes every 5 seconds or so.
The worst thing about this is, I have become very sensitive to sounds even small sounds. I can't handle going around outside when its a bit windy, as the sound the trees make, makes my tinnitus in my left ear go crazy and also gives me a sense of fullness in my ears which makes some sounds, sound kinda low compared to others. It usually goes away when I get home and sit for a bit. I have been trying to use maskers but it only makes so much worse. I am really down on options.
I have contacted my personal doctor, to see if they know any form of place where I can get some professional help. As it is my understanding that this is most likely permanent, I just wish this can get better. As ive told my parents, they are the only ones who is keeping me here on this earth as of now. I am only 19 years of age, and now everything I used to love is gone forever... Which makes everything seem pointless...
