Should Tinnitus Sufferers Worry About Paracetamol/Ibuprofen/Codeine?

Have just seen a report that says hearing can be affected by paracetamol. 21% more likely to lose some hearing is a high percentage.

If this is true then surely paracetamol affects ears in some way. It's the one thing I thought was ok with T!

How often are you taking paracetamol and/or ibuprofen? It seems you need to be taking it quite frequently according this report (and assuming they've done their sums right).

hi dezdog - I take it a couple of times a week since the T started. Not a lot.. but more than I did before.

I was actually looking up ibuprofen when I found this article because I'd rubbed it on my knee a couple of times before the T started & I still frantically search for a T 'reason' on the days when it screams .

It is the Daily Mail so its probably inaccurate but I've never seen any link before for paracetamol/hearing . I just don't want to take anything that could make it worse.

There's a possibility it might be having an effect I guess, but from the amount you're using, you'd have to be fairly sensitive; if so, then it might be easy to test yourself. Otherwise, I don't think you're using it often enough, according to the article.

Some of the other peeps here are likely more informed than I am (I'm only going on the article), so we should see what they say, if anything.

Actually the main ingredient of Paracetamol is Acetaminophen here in the US...Ibuprofen I know may cause tinnitus but I think its dosage related...

my tinnitus definitely got worse when taking acetaminophen with codeine for a toothache...prescribed by dentist ,i took far less than the prescription allowed...

i dont know if it was the combination or if either alone is ototoxic...but recently have read that each alone is potentially a problem

though i can not prove cause and effect, i am not willing to risk it again

It seems to state Ibuprofen can give tinnitus symptoms in 3-9%.

I don't know about long-term. If that percentage is right, it most certainly includes temporary tinnitus too.

I've taken Ibuprofen many times after getting tinnitus, it's the only thing that works for my headaches, and I've never got any adverse effects.

That's not an easy question to answer.

If your tinnitus is not related to ototoxic drugs or infection then I would assume at least 200mg would be safe to take. Tylenol is purportedly more ototoxic than ibuprofen.

When I had a nasty cold/flu in december last year I really needed something to remove the fever and I took my time to research the best option.

I think paracetamol has a batter safety profile than ibuprofen when it comes to tinnitus (this is just my opinion though) and I used it for few days without my tinnitus worsening. Just thought to share - paracetamol in my opinion is completely safe when used in moderation.

This is the first time I've seen paracetamol mentioned in conjunction with hearing loss or tinnitus. I've seen ibuprofen mentioned a million times though.

To be honest, I wouldn't stress about it - I've taken paracetamol a million times since getting tinnitus and haven't noticed any changes at all. I used to worry about ibuprofen, but I saw a great audiologist, Dr Ross Dineen (he's had a heap of stuff published and is a leading tinnitus researcher/doc here) and he assured me that normal doses are fine - you'd have to take ALOT of ibuprofen over a period of time to trigger any sort of permanent ototoxic effect. Any increase of tinnitus perception using ibuprofen at normal doses is definitely temporary. Same thing applies to asprin AFAIK.

Dr. Oz had a special on the dangers of excessive Tylenol use. He said that it is hard on the ears, and can cause tinnitus and hearing loss over time.

Edit: Almost forgot...there is an herbal remedy for headaches and fever called feverfew. It is not expensive here in the states, but I am not sure if it is freely available abroad. The herb is a good inflammation fighter, and it is purportedly great for migraines.

I woke up with a bad headache - panadol 6 hours ago didn't touch it, and my vision is a little funny and my jaw feels like I've had it clenched for hours - I suspect I may have had a migraine overnight so want to take a codine tablet (500mg paracetamol, 10mg codine)

I would usually take 2 but haven't had codeine since T onset.

Is it safe?

I agree with yonkapin. I've taken Panacod several times after the onset of tinnitus (the brand name Panacod contains 500mg paracetamol and 10mg codeine here in Finland). I'm still fine!

My Nurse Practitioner told me Tylenol was safe to take (not to exceed recommended dosage) since I have T. Prior to T, I was taking excedrin (aspirin, ibuprofen and caffeine). I was on Sudafed, ibuprofen and antibiotics, when my T started so I'm a little head shy with any of those. I've taken Tylenol and ("knocks on wood") not had a change in T. That's my go to anti inflammatory if I absolutely need something.

What we could really use is a list of non-ototoxic drugs so we can take it to the store and Doctors office.

I suffer with my back (sometimes to the point of not being able to leave the floor!) and have bouts of taking quite a bit of Ibuprofen, I've not noticed it make any difference to T.

Hi all, does anybody know if taking one 200mg of ibuprofen will make my tinnitus worse? I took one yesterday due to tooth pain and instantly regretted it as i know ibuprofen can cause tinnitus. I noticed it was slightly louder last night but no significant changes but am very worried if it will do anything over the next few days? I've never taken ibuprofen before after getting tinnitus. Has anybody taken ibuprofen with no damage done? I got tinnitus from taking anti depressants so worry the most about tablets and tinnitus.

no, one pill of ibuprofen does nothing. it has to be taken over a longer period of time in a high dosis, same as aspirin, to be ototoxic. you noticed your T more because you were focussing on it thinking it might get worse. if you have problems with caries on the other hand and that's why you had tooth ache you should get that checked out by a dentist because an inflamed tooth can worsen T.

Almost any drug can temporarily worsen tinnitus but only a few drugs are truly ototoxic. Do not worry needlessly. Paracetamol is the brand name of Tylenol (acetaminophen) in the UK. Ibuprofen, like aspirin, in low doses is not ototoxic.

Hi all, does anybody know if taking one 200mg of ibuprofen will make my tinnitus worse?

Months ago I took 600mg twice, no change (besides ofc, me being paranoid about T every time I take any pill). Two days ago I had half 25mg meloxicam, no change. I'm also atm on day 2 of a 4 days course of Rhodogil (Espiramicina + Metronidazol) 125mg x4/day. No change, except me stalking T looking for any difference.

Dr. Ancill - it was high doses of sertraline and prozac which i had a severe adverse reaction to which caused my tinnitus.
