Hi. My name is Jay and I live in northern New England. I am retired from an environmental engineering management position I held for two decades with MASCO Corp.

I have never had hearing or ear problems before the summer of 2012 after 5 SMART meters were installed on the wall of my apartment building 30 feet from my bedroom. (There was supposed to be 6 but I refused to allow my old meter to be replaced.)

I have had a LOUD CONSTANT ringing in my head ever since.

I'm wanting to scream but have decided to join this forum instead. Maybe discussion will help.

Thanks

Hi Jay! And Welcome!!

Tell me about it! So sorry!

I am aware of the Smart Meter dangers. I am guessing you are now as well.

Is there any way you can file a legal complaint about the meters causing tinnitus?

Here is a resource with infor on them...

The World Health Organization recently classified RF as a 2B carcinogen, same as DDT and lead. Military studies here and here show pulsed RF can cause serious health problems, including tinnitus, memory loss and seizures. Thousands of studies link biological effects to RF exposure. International experts warn against RF hazards associated with the dumb meters. http://emfsafetynetwork.org/?page_id=872

Here is the latest on the Legal filings: http://emfsafetynetwork.org/?page_id=8805

There is more on the web if you do some googling. However, I expect that you have already done some research on smart meter dangers.

When I came down with tinnitus, I invested in emf sheilds and neutralizers. I use the Aulterra whole house plug and Aulterra disks http://www.aulterrainternational.com/ for my cells, computers, wifis, and electrical appliances as well. https://www.aulterrainternational.com/store/aulterra-whole-house-plug/

I did quite a lot of research on the Aulterra products and spoke directly with the people there. I feel confident in them and have had no more physical effects from EMFs that I can tell.

If you do a search here on EMF/RFs you might find further information.

If you haven't already, look around the site. I have started some natural coping techniques for stress and anxiety on a thread under "Support" if you care to have a look .... and there are other threads on ways to help as well.

That's a great post by calin. I think all of us are sounded by this EMF/RF, it's everwhere isn't it. Maybe the smart meters are more pulsed RF Power than one might think. It really makes me wonder, tons of people don't like them. They put one on my house near my washing machine, and the breaker keeps kept tripping now. I'd also see a doctor Jay. I hate this ear ringing.

Near the washing machine???? Yikes!

Did you already have your tinnitus when the meter was installed?

I wash clothes outside. I have an older house. I'm lucky to have a house. No, I did not have the T back then when the meter was installed. Just happened lately.

Hey James... I hear ya! I am lucky to have a house too!

Do you suspect that the smart meter may have contributed to your T? You have had tests right? Nothing was found... right?

I'm fixing up my house, its a long project. Anyway, I don't think the smart meter did it, but I open to all points of view. If someone feels that way, I certainly respect that. My MRI was nothing found. Something triggered the T in me. I'm finally getting some sleep now. Sometimes its acting up.

I live in row brownstone home, I'm close to the end, there are 20 smart meters about 20 feet from me, another 20 about 40-50 feet from me. I know this was not the cause of my tinnitus, but maybe it's making it worse? I'm home a lot, only ever leave for maybe a couple of hours max. I also notice that I have strong wifi signals from the units around me, looking at my phone there are a lot of full strength signals right where I sleep. I wonder if I'm hurting myself here. My gf has tinnitus as well, but isn't home as often, she does complain of headaches.

OMG @Telis, you are literally swimming in an ocean of toxic EMFs. I would be shocked if this EMF brew is not greatly affecting your tinnitus and ability to sleep.

I'm glad you bumped up this thread, as the second post by @calin is really good, and gives a lot of food for thought. I noticed from the getgo of my tinnitus in February, that working on my laptap causes it to spike in varying degrees, even though I already use a grounding pad underneath it. It gets worse much more quicly when I forget to use the grounding pad.

We recently had smart meters installed in our neighborhood (couple months ago). I will have to pay $35/month as an "opt fee" to keep our old analog meter. I'm pissed about that, but not only am I protecting myself for some pretty toxic sh*t, but our electric bills won't go up like it will for those who get the new "smart" meters. They use a lot of electricity to send so many signals out all the time. Real smart, huh? I don't see one single benefit to consumers for having these, and a whole lot of downside.

Yeah I don't know how many times over the years that I've used the description "my brain feels like it's being cooked" as a way to describe my tinnitus. I honestly had no clue that this could actually be happening. The bank of meters have been using AMR technology before the new meters which apparently can be worse or just as bad as smart meters. apparently there is also RF coming from the water meters as well, so another bank of 20 meters, plus all the power coming into the units at this same point, I assume the wiring would be carrying radiated noise. I'm going to have to buy a meter and check it out, or have someone come and look, but it doesn't seem like this could possibly be safe from the digging around that I've done.

"my brain feels like it's being cooked"

Hey @Telis, I've experimented a LOT with eating various foods over the years, and have discovered one particular food that seems to "ground" my brain and neurological system better than anything else--bone broth. There's lots of directions online on how to make it, but I've come up with a very simple way of making it so it's not so burdensome.

Essentially, I buy organic chicken necks (about a dozen in a single pack) and boil them for about an hour or so. I let them cool a bit, and then throw them in a blender, and season with Himalayan salt and butter. I can generally get about a gallon's worth of broth out of that simple recipe. Whatever I don't think I'll drink in the next 3-5 days, I'll go ahead and freeze.

When I do heat up a cup to drink, I add 1-2 egg yolks to it. I discovered this combo early on after I got tinnitus in February, and came to regard it as my "comfort food". It really did seem to ground me in some inexplicable way, and also seemed to take the edge off the tinnitus. At one point, I almost sort of fasted on bone broth for about 1-2 weeks.

Of course, there's other recipes as well, and you can experiment with all kinds of things, like adding various vegetables like onion, celery, etc. Just don't let the somewaht complicated recipe directions online detract from how relatively easy it is to incorporate this into your diet.

I have chimed in before on the topic of tinnitus related to EM exposure. The bottom line is there is simply no compelling research to support the correlation of Tinnitus to RF exposure within the typical everyday low energy EM fields that we all experience.

There is a thing called Microwave Auditory Effect. This is a fairly well documented phenomenon. High energy microwaves have the energy to move and vibrate molecules including the molecules that make up your head and auditory system. It is through the RF vibration of molecules that your kitchen microwave is able to heat up food. The actual mechanism of Microwave Auditory Effect is not well understood but thought to be minuscule thermal expansions within our heads creating a pressure wave moving through the skull and then being picked up via the extremely sensitive auditory system of people with sensitive hearing. The important thing to realize however is that these effects have only been observed at fairly high RF energy exposure levels. From the research I could find the lower limit of energy density required for any perception of sound is around 300 mW/cm2. Because of the inverse square law of EM field propagation this requires you to be very close to a powerful transmission source.

To give some context to everyday RF exposure levels the most powerful microwave source that most of us are exposed to in our daily lives happen when he hold a cell phone right up to our ear placing the phone's transmitter mere milliliters from our head and brain. This output is in the 5 to 10mW/cm^2 range which appears to be well under the power necessary to induce the Microwave Auditory Effect. It is also important to note the studies on Microwave Auditory Effect did not list lingering tinnitus a side effect. The sounds were barely perceivable (and only by those with exceptional hearing) and as soon as the transmitters were powered down the perception of sound ceased. It is also important to note that many people spend many hours a day browsing and texting on their cell phones exposing parts of their body to around 1 mW/cm^2 of wifi microwave radiation for hours on end day after day.

According to this document: A smart meter at ~1 meter distance puts out 0.0001 to .002 mw/cm^2. At ~3 meters it falls to .0002 to 0.000009 mw/cm^2 (remember the inverse square law). These RF exposures are many orders of magnitude smaller than typical daily cell phone use at very similar or identical frequencies. It is also important to note that technicians who work with high powered RF gear are frequently exposed many orders of magnitude higher RF energy levels than the rest of us are exposed to without any definitive ill health effects as a result of their exposure.

That's not to say there may not be hidden health impacts of our daily cell phone use and thus RF exposure. The jury is still out on that. But if RF exposure can indeed induce tinnitus I would expect to see it is from a close and powerful RF source such as a cell phone or tablet which we hold in our hands for hours on end rather than a relatively much more distant smart meter which only transmits at similar power levels and frequencies intermittently.

Bottom line is be very skeptical about what you read on the Internet and make sure you carefully read through the journal articles and research data that are listed as sources.

I did not initially make the connection between the arrival of smart meters in my area and the concurrent sudden onset of 24/7 tinnitus after 64 years of it not being a problem. That it did begin concurrent with the arrival of Duke Energy's smart meters in my neighborhood might have been merely a somewhat bizarre temporal coincidence.

Six weeks later, however, I had occasion to leave my area for a few hours and noticed while gone that the tinnitus eventually completely ceased for the first time since it started. Unfortunately, when I returned to my area the 'whining' in my ears also returned. That did get my attention, but I thought it might have been a second temporal coincidence, albeit a very improbable one. A few weeks later I again left my area and after a few hours absence the tinnitus completely ceased again for only the second time since its onset. Unfortunately, and very annoyingly, it also came back again for the second time when I returned to my area.

Any of those three geographic and temporal coincidences occurring alone would have been highly unlikely and for any two of them to happen unlikely in the extreme bordering on impossible, but for all three of those events to be geographic and temporal coincidences is virtually impossible. That notwithstanding, just to play it very safe on the chance there was an underlying organic issue, I talked to my regular physician about it and he referred me to an ear, nose, and throat specialist. That physician found no acoustic neuromas nor other health issues that would explain the sudden onset of tinnitus with no prior history, especially so in the context of its repeatedly observed very area-specific nature. Based upon its geographic-specific and temporal history and the negative medical examination findings it seems certain beyond any reasonable doubt the tinnitus that is constantly annoying and distracting me, and occasionally keeping me from sleeping, is due to a new broadly distributed element in my local environment that is toxic to at least some of the population and there is but one candidate in my area at for that element, the smart meters.

'Opting out' is not a real option with Duke Energy/the Kentucky Public Service Commission despite their 'advertising to that effect as their so-called meter 'opt out' program is in practice a stealth 'smart' meter forced 'opt in' program. The most safety they claim they will provide if you do attempt to 'opt out,' without any proof to date that they will do even it, is the relatively ineffective deactivation of the two or three transceivers in an individual meter. That is of little use unless all other homes' meters in the area's mesh networks are also deactivated so they cease flooding the neighborhoods 24/365 with pulsed radiation given that 'smart' meters are designed to 'talk' to other meters in their mesh network, possibly a mile or two distant in rural settings, at calculated radiation levels up to 160x that of a typical cell phone. Merely deactivating the transceivers also does not negate the meter's internal switchable mode power supply (SMPS) which converts high voltage supply side power to low volt power for the meter's delicate circuit boards, etc., and which in so doing creates its own set of hazards independent of, and in addition to, the transceivers' hazards.

Among my concerns are that with prolonged 'smart' meter radiation exposure any hearing damage will become permanent as can happen also with noise. If you forget your hearing protection once while around loud noise generators such as aircraft, firearms, and machinery any resulting hearing issues likely will be temporary, but if you are exposed chronically the loss can be permanent.

@Lane Pretty neat you found that way to make bone broth. FYI, for those in the US, Trader Joe's has a variety of organic bone broth offerings, and I see Target sells some kind also.

..
This emf topic has some relevance to me. I have one client with a very high tech office with monitors everywhere and in the first few months of my T it would always rise when I was there more than 1-2 hours. Lately, I am less reactive to whatever is there, thank God.
