Cause of Tinnitus
loud noise and very bad sickness
Hi folks,

it's morning time and I had to write a post that makes one just shake their head and shake it in disbelief.

I was on vacation last April and I decided to visit my uncle. My ears are very poor and a great amount of my hearing is covered by tinnitus and that makes it much much worst. My uncle has a low voice that even some people with normal hearing can barely understand and he mumbles a lot as well. I have always had a hard time understanding what he says and normally don't even try holding a conversation with him.

So I went over there and his wife was also there, she knows that I have ringing in the ears but she's not 100% aware of the difficulties it can bring on. My uncle starts speaking to me and I tell him to speak a little louder. He's like "is there something wrong with your ears".He's seen me for many decades and it's not like I have never seen him or anything. He knows about my ear issues. Then I tell him that my ears also ring very loud and it's intrusive.

He still talks but then talks even lower and there was no chance at all, understanding what he was saying. Trying to listen and communicate with someone that has a LOW tone voice, with severe hearing loss and intrusive tinnitus is beyond torture and for me somewhat impossible to do.

Then he keeps saying that there is a cure for this thing, maybe you are not working hard enough to cure it. I started laughing and not getting mad, because I don't want to take out 30 years of hell out on him. He keeps mumbling and mumbling and I was like...please do not speak to me if you want to whisper, talk louder and we can talk if not....lets have silence :)

It just amazes me what type of people exist in our world. Point of this post is to always stand your ground, don't let anyone ruffle your feathers....Family, friends can and will make you shake your head at times, just smile and move on. Try to educate them, but don't have expectations....

I'm fortunate that my girlfriend tries to understand, but this is a condition that is hard for people to understand if they're not suffering from the same. I sometimes have trouble understanding how those with "unexplicable" anxiety and depression feel about things, and I'm guessing that's how people can react to us.

"Everybody" has experienced ringing ears, and therefor many thinks that "it can't be that bad"...

Yes, we can have pure empathy when we have walked in the shoes of those that suffer. But ignorance is another thing, my uncle displays that ignorance and that's why my head shakes....

They may have experienced it and it may have faded. having it 24-7 and it being intrusive is beyond hell and no one will call it a good day...

I can just imagine someone with hearing loss trying to hold a conversation with a low talker...who happens to mumble. How frustrating that must have been for you. Sounds like you handled it well and kept peace with the family. I think I remember reading that you're not interested in hearing aids, but honestly, they help not only with hearing but with tinnitus as well. But I don't have to tell you that.
