Hey guys,

Anyone got any speakers they can recommend, that are high quality and can be kept at low volume, non-bassy and such that are not heavy on the ears?

@Dij111

I have been an Audiophile for many years. If you want to listen to high quality music reproduction through speakers then you first have to look at your source components. Whether you are using vinyl records, in this case a turntable, CD player or using a computer or network player to listen to music files or other media. You need to have the best quality "source components" that you can afford. The reason being, a good quality source component will extract the maximum amount of music information from the vinyl grooves, CDs, music files. A source component that is not of high or good quality will be unable to do this. Once the music is lost at the "front end" by the source component the best speakers in the world cannot retrieve it. High quality speakers that you seek will only show up the limitations of your source components.

So in order to achieve high quality sound reproduction get your source components right, then amplification and then decided on speakers. In order to hear high quality audio it can be quite complex. I don't know how far you wish to go? In my case I use mains power conditioners to clean the electricity before it reaches my Amplifier. Then there are the cables: Interconnect cables, speaker cables which can have a profound impact on the sound. Next is the equipment supports that the HI-FI sits on, this also can influence the sound a lot not to mention the listening room. In many cases to hear high quality music through HI-FI the listen room needs to be acoustically treated.

If you just want to listen to music through a computer with speakers, then what I've mentioned above may not be of importance. In this case another member will probably be able to help you. However, if you want to listen to high quality audio through speakers, then it's imperative you follow my advice to obtain the best sound quality.

All the best
Michael.

PS: I notice that your tinnitus was caused by headphones. I advise you never to use headphones again even at low volume.

Bumping this. Feeling too lazy to make my own. I've been depressed not voice chatting for fear of making my hyperacusis worse. I am looking for computer speakers and portable phone speakers that will make sound nore natural and not have that tinny effect to them.

I really need something by Saturday. Any suggestions?

I have a small Bose wireless speaker that I love. It seems far more natural than any other speaker I've tried; white noise even sounds better than it did with a WNG that I tried.

It was around $100 USD.

I own a pair of these. Not bad at all and not tinny sounding. They sound pretty OK on lower volumes.

ps. i also own a pair of tannoy prestige speakers and a tube amplifier. But sadly H is keeping me from listening to them for 4 damn years in a row now. My tube amplifer is sitting in a box in a closet. :( My source is a 20kg heavy luxman cd player.

Haven't had the haert to sell my tannoys. Maybe one day when the H miraculously dissapears or gets better i can fire em up again ...

This and my sennheiser hd650 where my trusted audio friends. Now its silence or some small dell 5w soundbar on my pc.

I use the luxman on the yamaha nx 50 now. Pretty funny sight: a huge high end cd player on a 100$ speaker. Sound is ok and warm and pretty musical (not analytic or bright).

@Red. Sadly most of all loudspeakers. Of course, crappy tinny sounding loudspeakers, are more fatiguing to listen to in general. But bass heavy(er) speakers are just not doable for me anymore. I don't have pain H but i get this unpleasant pressure in my ears from low freq. Like the low rumble of stationary cars and buses and trucks irritates me after a few seconds... A TTTS symptom i geuss. My T tends to get more reactive too then. I can have pain in my ears if i push it too much, and my TMJ causes pain and pressure too at times.

I might go for a smaller bookshelf from Tannoy like this one (i really like their 'dual concentric' ones)

And maybe a new low powered tube amp. My current one is pretty ok too.

I really like the single ended triode tube amps warmth and smooth natural sound. They are mostly low power, and with my H i'm aiming for low level listening. These low powered tube amps can give a lot of detail on low levels

I can start with quieter singer songwriter stuff maybe ... one day... man i miss this stuff.

ps the bigger tannoy pestige ones are notorious for their real life like scale and dynamics. Thats what you loose with H. Your ears mostly can't adept anymore to the 'dynamic shifts' in sound
Some tannoys are (or used to be) popular in recording studios too.
