My tinnitus is loud and 24x7, 99% of the time.

But on rare, and seemingly unpredictable occasions, I have spells of silence. They usually don't last more than an hour or two. I have never been able to pin any associations to sleep, health, diet, exercise, or any other factor.

I have always wondered, if my body is capable of shutting it off, there might be hope for treatment or therapy to trigger these moments of peace. When these occur, I shut myself in dark, quiet room and savor the silence for as long as it last, however fleeting.

Still, the tinnitus always returns...

@Mattv,

Your brain could be learning to filter out the sound so enjoy your peaceful ear time and try not search for the sound...

Damn. I visited a chiro this week based on that success story. I notice a lot of "success stories" from people who are back posting about not coping with tinnitus years later. :(

I have a had a few moments like that as well, usually upon waking in the morning. It's like magic, hearing silence again. But then as you notice the silence, the tinnitus begins to creep back in. I too have wondered if this is a physical thing with ear/brain connection, or if this is the beginnings of habituation where the brain is somehow filtering out the noise. Tinnitus is such a mysterious malady, and doctors don't seem to know a damned thing about it.
