So far on my tinnitus journey the one thing I've learned that stands out above all else in regards to this terrible affliction we all share are spikes.

Just when you feel better or feel more confidant or feel you can beat this.....you have a spike....and the world comes crashing down again. It's the ultimate gut wrenching reality of it all.

I really truly don't know how to deal with the spikes. It's like starting all over again. My spikes come from sleeping....which you can't avoid. I just want my old life back before tinnitus.......

When spike is not due to noise or meds you can be 100% sure that everything is gonna be ok in a while, there's no need to be scared.

As the time pass you learn a lot about your T, and you know when it's normal spike or something bad. Just experience.

You just have to be strong and get through it until it settles and comes back to a baseline. I wish it was as easy as getting a Paracetamol when you have a spike, like when you have a headache and be ok in a while.

I get this too. I went to bed last night and my T was relatively calm. Just woke up after 4/5 hours and it's blaring. Hoping that when I go back to sleep again it settles back down. (On the whole, I have learnt to deal with this, even when it's bad). There really is no pattern to it or one that I can find and some mornings or awakenings are worse than others. I at least know it will settle back down again eventually and this is what gets me through. It does normally calm down during the day, though occasionally I may have to wait until the next sleep cycle for it to improve. It's not easy but I think you can get through it, it takes time. In relation to the saying above.. 'In time you learn a lot about your T and it does become less daunting'.

Pre stems, I just reached a point that I knew every few months, I would have a spike (usually when I am tired)

Post stems (may 2017), I have been noticing less frequent and intense spikes.

It may be something youll want to consider.

I dont know what the cause of your t was but my stem cell dr told me that he sees the greatest benefits for those affected by ototoxicity and autoimmunity. I have spoken to one other person, who received adipose derived stem cells for back pain, which incidentally eradicated his t and h (hearing loss) as a pleasant side effect!

The worst part about tinnitus is the thought "this is the sound I will have to listen to for the rest of my life." This is the thought I get within minutes of getting a spike. If only I knew that it would be gone in 2 years, it would not bother me That much.

I learned that most spikes are temporary. My longest spike lasted over 3 months. When I get a spike, I tell myself that I am going to assume that it is temporary, and will begin worrying that it is permanent after 3 months.

In case you haven't seen it yet, check out the thread below where I summarize everything (24 tips spread over three posts) I learned about managing tinnitus after reading the posts on this forum for the past 11 months

Tip #6 provides links to threads/polls where spike duration is discussed.

Is that really so? Can a spike not be longer than that?
Of course it could be longer than three months. I am just saying that it is irrational (and at the same time natural) to worry about it becoming permanent after having it for a couple of days.
