hi guys,

Thought I'd throw this out there to get some community feedback.

I am supposed to be on a stag do this weekend, but debating whether or not to attend. What with the tinnitus, a weekend of potential noise and drinking really doesn't appeal.

I don't really drink much anyways, but it is the awkwardness around possible pub venues, restaurants and then casino (I won't go clubbing).

Is this a risk worth taking, or is it better to come clean to my friend and prevent possible weeks of anxiety following this.

All comments and help welcome!

Bring musicians earplugs and have fun, you don't need to wear them in the casino. The casino has a ton of noises of the slots but as far as dangerous decibels it's very unlikely. I'm always able to hear the person next to me without problems in casinos. Unless there is a band or DJ playing. In the pub if it's loud put in musician's ear plugs in.

Bro, first of all very nice seeing you again :)

I have known you for quite a while. I would suggest, that you possibly avoid the stag do. You get pretty stressed out and anxious over sounds and this venue (even with ear protection) could bother you(mentally and a possible spike(s)). It's 100% up to you on what you do, but unless you have your anxiety/stress in check....I'd avoid it.

Elfin, you should come clean whether you go or not. It's not nice to suffer in silence, and most people are far more understanding than you realise if you're honest with them. If you decide to go make sure you take some earplugs with you and use them if you go anywhere loud. In my opinion, you're not ready for loud environments, mentally, and it may just turn into a weekend of stress for you.

The best thing you can do is say you'll go, but explain the situation and see what they think. Tell them you may need to take breaks or avoid certain places etc, because that's the only way I can see you going and having a good time. And that's if you can keep your anxiety under control everywhere else.

Good luck buddy.

You have had tinnitus since 2004, so I know you have a good gauge on yourself. Anxiety is terrible and I can also relate to obsessing after an incident and the feeling of self guilt. However, what you are going to do is not out of the ordinary when using good judgement and ear plugs.

You are not going to a club, strip club, or concert. We are talking about a casino, restaurant and some pubs. Just have a few drinks to relax yourself and if the pub is too loud even if your safe with earplugs in go outside maybe every so often. I think rationally you will know that you are going to be fine. Practice putting the ear plugs in properly and if need be bring a decibel reader with you. I monitor more the average decibel range than the peaks for the most part. Unless the peak is in the mid 90's LOL. I haven't read your previous posts so I'm not sure how you deal with your anxiety. But, if you haven't been on the site in awhile typically that might mean your doing better with things.

  • Bring musician's ear plugs and foam plugs
  • A small decibel reader (unless seeing certain levels scare you)
  • Drink water in between alcoholic drinks
  • Take breaks every once an awhile and find quite places
  • Enjoy the conversations with friends
  • If there is a DJ or band either don't go in or stay furthest from the speaker. Use your decibel reader to gauge the loudness

Afterwards if you have a temporary spike try to think logically.
  • it could be due to a hang over
  • Did you have issues sleeping
  • Do you have a cold
  • Was there any weather changes, rain etc.
  • Sometimes wearing plugs our tinnitus likes to go more in the forefront after we take them out. Of course it's not a permanent change

You know yourself better than us, but with ear protection in moderately loud areas your fine.

@Elfin
Hi,
We haven't interacted before, but I read this thread last week and have been wondering how everything went for you. Hope it went well!
