Still Really Annoyed With My Doctor!

It sounds silly, but I had a sinus infection before a gig and was given anti biotics, which end with the mycin.

I told him I was going to a gig and I believe the combination of these two caused my T. I continued taking the course with T and this made it so much worse. I know I can't blame him as I probably would have got T eventually, but do they not understand medications being ototoxic?

I guess I need to stop blaming my self and the doctor and just get over it but it's just frustrating, I shouldn't have gone to the doctors!

I believe I have tinnitus; along with other health conditions as a result of a fluoroquinolone.

I was initially angry at my dr for not looking at alternative, safer options before proceeding to use a known ototoxic medication.

I have thought 'if only I had questioned my treatment' many times............but it doesn't get me anywhere emotionally...it just leads me to more despair, anguish, and frustration.........so I try not to focus on the negative....and look for solutions and moving forward............X

if oral use of mycin antibiotics has anything to do with tinnitus, and if use of mycin antibiotics during noise exposure is associated with problems, then those are two things that are true but for which there is no research and no prescribing guidelines. Meanwhile, thousands of people take these drugs every week without any problems.

Your doctor probably did the best he knew how for you, and would be very upset if he thought he'd do any of his patients serious harm.

edit: note that mycin antibiotics are not the same as micin antibiotics (Aminoglycosides) - micin drugs are definitely known to be ototoxic. Mycin drugs are not, and are among the most commonly used drugs in the world.

I must agree with @linearb -- doctors aren't infallible, although I agree that some need to take the ototoxic issue more seriously than they do. They also need to be better educated about tinnitus. I had one insist tinnitus and anxiety aren't related - while pretty much everyone agrees that T can spark serious reactions from the automatic nervous system.

More important: I think its easy to get caught up in trying to figure out what caused our tinnitus, beating ourselves up about not being proactive, etc. Many of us will never know exactly what brought on our tinnitus. Plus it may be a mix of things, as @DebInAustralia. What I have learned after almost two years of constant tinnitus is that at the end of the day, pinpointing a cause really matter in most cases. Fretting about it just makes you more anxious. And by in large, there is no cure or treatment regardless of the cause. Best to leave behind regret, remorse and anger, and move on to building coping skills and regaining your life.

Well the way I look at it, it's your body and you're not obligated to take anything your doc prescribes for you. If you have a suspicion something can cause T or has caused it for you then don't take it. If your doc doesnt like it, tough.

Most doctors are plain stupid. I went to hospital with my SSHL and they told me it's just an otitis media and prescribed me an ototoxic antibiotic. The leaflet stated may cause T. Again, how much brain do you need to become an otolaryngologist? By now I've learned more about the ear than they know. It's ridiculous!

@James P , you might be lucky and your T will solve eventually. I've a felling..

Interesting; I did not realize that some of the aminoglycosides do get the mycin suffix, so I am wrong about that. That makes the suffix itself seem pretty worthless as far as evaluating ear risks.

Geg, do you know which drug it was? Was it a pill, or drops?

An unfortunate reality is that untreated sinus/ear infections can also cause T. I'm generally very wary of taking antibiotics, but the wrong kind of ear/sinus problem might make me change my mind in a hurry. Take a pill, don't take a pill - it's always a crapshoot to some extent.

I haven't discovered it but was an advice of my neurologist. I was unable to take Trobalt due to excessive and serious side effect then, after various and long attempt with antiseizures drugs, he switch me on Keppra and after 15 days my hyperacusys disappear and i'm still H free by January. Anyway there aren't scientific evidences who suggest that Keppra can be useful in H. Probably i was "cured" naturally exactly like the single user who think that he was cured by trobalt.....but he is a single.... no others are cured by trobalt. Then the same for Keppra.
