The Average Timeframe for Resolution of Tinnitus From Onset

Hi Dr. Nagler,
To a recent question, you answered:

"Well, most tinnitus resolves on its own, given a bit of time".

In your work/knowledge of tinnitus, what have you seen as the average timeframe for resolution from onset - 3-8 months, 3-12 months, 3-18 months, 3-24 months? Or ... ?
Trying to also get a feel for the percentage of chronic patients that may experience resolution. So any speculation on this from your experience would be helpful.

I know of individuals for whom tinnitus totally disappeared after even five or ten years. That said, for any given person, the closer to the time of onset, the greater the chance for spontaneous resolution.

Most authorities feel that spontaneous resolution, if it is going to occur, is more likely to occur within the first 12-18 months than after 18 months. I would agree with that assessment, but I am unaware of any studies.

As far as speculation goes, rather than step into that quagmire I would say that if you have had tinnitus for more than a couple of months, why don't you simply operate under the assumption that you will continue to have it. Then, if it resolves at some point thereafter (as it may well do), you can be pleasantly surprised!
