Hey everyone, long time tinnitus sufferer here.

I got tinnitus from loud noise at age 14, and I habituated/got better.

8 weeks ago I had an extreme tinnitus spike, due to medication 'Finasteride'. It drove me insane, suicidal. I wanted to kill myself etc. I didn't want to be here anymore. Every day was a pure struggle.

Then I took 'GABA' and it has reduced my tinnitus so much! I have no idea if this will work for everybody but I came across it on a forum post on this site... so I tried it myself and it worked pretty well!

Stay strong people, it gets better i promise you, message me if you have any questions or need support. I'm always here for anybody who suffers from this condition as I am a part of it myself. I love you all.

I hope to continue to get better, but from going from suicidal to coping, I guess that's success!

@Lukeh1234h -- I'm happy to hear you're doing so much better with GABA supplementation. I hope you'll give much greater consideration to any drugs you use in the future. Too much on the line for people like us who already have a difficult tinnitus situation to deal with. -- Best...

Which type of GABA? Was it powder or capsules? I've triedGABA powder before but it never really had any effect on me.

Is that pharmagaba? Because apparently normal GABA does not cross the blood-brain barrier and does not reach the brain. I tried GABA but it didn't have any effect. Could you tell us the exact type of supplement and the dosage?
Thanks

If you have a response to GABA, then you possibly have a leaky blood brain barrier... since GABA without the addition of Niacin isn't thought to cross the BBB.

@DebInAustralia -- I've heard DMSO can help GABA cross the BBB. I just looked at some Amazon reviews on a GABA product, and others say L-theanine and nitric oxide can help as well. Taking it on an empty stomach also appears to be really helpful for some. -- I've also read that a lot of people have leaky BBB's, which wouldn't surprise me, given how many toxic chemicals the brain is probably exposed to.

No, it is just a form of a pill, GABA 500mg from the Body&Fit website, cost me £5 :)

I heard this too, and yeah I probably do haha, but I haven't been taking anything but GABA so it's either the GABA or a coincidence that it's starting to fade naturally whether I took the GABA or not. But I wanted to share with anyone just in case anyone else has success with this drug :)

Thank you, I am very skeptical about taking anything from now on, it's still annoying me but the fact that it's more manageable and I can actually sleep without a fan now is a great move forward. Thank you.

GABA is well known to be a useless supplement that is unable to cross the blood brain barrier. I notice a lot of placebo and anecdotal reporting here. GABA has never worked out, sorry, but you are providing misleading information probably driven by the typical up and downs in our condition.

You might have spontaneous improvement that is common in early tinnitus sufferers, but if you understand the nature of the tinnitus beast, you should know that there is nothing in the world that can even touch it. Don't waste your time and money in good for nothing supplements. Simply, there is nothing out there, and the sooner you realize it, the sooner you will face the actual issue, that is the cognitive and emotional impact in our lives. In my case, it is devastating and I can not evangelize any good treatments. You will habituate or not, that is the end of the tunnel.

There is mixed evidence in the literature for this - I suspect the blood brain barrier in many or most is not as air tight as posited.
