Cause of Tinnitus
Acoustic trauma
So, for five days now I've been dealing with a rather heavy cold. General weakness, running nose, cough, dizziness, lots of sweating when sleeping and yes, of course, tinnitus is OFF THE HOOK.

Thing is I don't feel my ears clogged at all and my crystal clear hearing (despite having minor hearing loss) is still being pristine.

Is the same for you, guys? Why does it happen? So nasty I'm about to pray for this cold to end.

Sorry to hear about your cold. I am dreading getting a cold as last time two years ago I ended up having a permanent spike in my good ear.

So that permanent spike still hasn't subsided?

I also had a bad spike due to a nasty cold two years ago. It lasted three weeks before going back to baseline.

My tinnitus started six years ago when at a 10 minute noisy event while having a cold as well.

Stay strong, @El BUZZ!

It's that wonderful time of the year... again.

I haven't had a cold since my tinnitus came back and I'm trying to avoid it as much as possible.

From what i recall, @Steph1710 had some nasty episodes of cold this autumn and some spikes, but they disappeared after a period of time.

No it hasn't subsided but my tinnitus gets worse every year mainly due to loud noises.
Unexpected loud sounds I guess.
Mine has been possible to be heard everywhere since day one. Nothing masks it. Nothing. Despite many spikes which had always resolved, it hasn't worsened in 6 years. Fingers crossed. I try to be extremely careful with my ears.

Not really unexpected loud sounds but I am trying to live to a certain degree while also being extremely cautious. Yes nothing masks my tinnitus so sleeping is becoming more difficult.

You're another one with severe tinnitus I look up to for inspiration because you're managing to live life. It's tough as hell.

Did you have tinnitus that went away and then came back? I have as well.

Did it go away or was it habituation?
I don't know, it's hard to say.

Maybe it went away, because I've never heard it since 2014, but I didn't search for it either.

What I did though was wearing protection all these years (earplugs in noisy environments) so it's not like I forgot about it completely.

I don't think it went away but became very, very soft.

Yes, I've developed tinnitus in 2012. I've been ok for many years (2014-2021).
Just to clarify, you were tinnitus free for 8 years after having it for 2 years?

I've had a similar experience although I was not tinnitus free for eight years. I developed tinnitus in 2015 after a loud rock concert. I had it for about two years and it disappeared and it was gone for like three. Then I had some mild hearing loss in my left ear and I got this echo tone that I had for about nine months. Then it changed to a pure tone ring for about 2 1/2 months after a slight worsening of my hearing loss. Then it seemed to resolve. This was after a long course of steroids. I basically had to beg my PCP to give me a longer course, as my ENT would only give me a Medrol pack which is only five days.

My main issue right now is this bilateral high-pitched tinnitus that the ENT think it's related to allergies and TMJ. I had it on and off for about six months last year and then it resolved and then it came back in March of this year just one allergy season kicked up. Who knows. They gave me steroids and it helped a little and then it came back. So who knows what's going on. Next stop is the Cranialfacial specialist.
