Bipartisan support for tinnitus research needed

It was nice to read the BDN's recent recent article about tinnitus and the high rate of occurrence among veterans. This health issue is often overlooked, and it's wonderful that more attention is being paid to it. In fact, despite the VA paying out over $1.1 billion to veterans in 2010 for tinnitus disability compensation, the American Tinnitus Association says that only $10 million is dedicated to research in the public and private sectors.
It's precisely because tinnitus is the No. 1 service connected disability for veterans that I introduced the bipartisan Tinnitus Research and Treatment Act. This bill will ensure that the VA is dedicating appropriate research time and resources to tinnitus. We must remain on the cutting edge for research and treatment of the health issues facing veterans of all ages, and I will continue working with my colleagues on both sides of the aisle to bring attention to this issue.

the Department of Veterans Affairs' guidelines for health care providers who treat veterans' hearing problems. The guidelines state that tinnitus is frequently triggered by psychological factors, such as bereavement, stress and anxiety.
Through 2011, more than 840,000 veterans were on the service-connected tinnitus roster. Military members are often exposed to engine and weapon noises as well as the loud detonation of improvised explosive devices."

tbh i'm not going to critcize the ATA anymore, they do help fund a lot of useful studies. It's just that they are clearly compromised by TRTers. Also apparently it's a "juvenile opinion" to hold that research and habituation studies are competing. when that's just the reality. The ATA can do many good things they just have to get serious and people have to fund them.

I agree. They're just not doing well with the funds they do have.

I've done a pretty good analysis with the ATA. They used to be very good. Remember they did fund Susan Shore. Nothing wrong with the concept of the ATA itself but it has one big issue; corruption. Or namely, a lot of people hold a high degree of power in the ATA that shouldn't have it, like you said. Dr. Nagler is part of the scientific advisory committee, and if I recall correctly, Jastreboff is part of the ATA too. Perhaps that explains some of ATA's funding choices and sense of research direction?

I'm sure ATA is full of people who want to actually find a cure for tinnitus, but the ATA is a small community, and corruption absolutely devastates small communities.

Before I read this forum I also felt like there was something off about the ATA. When mine first started I found that site and to be honest, it crushed my hopes. I have since then regained my hopes of being totally cured either by that Susan Shore machine, OR that FX-322 LGR5+ goop. My T has improved to the point where I don't even hear it but maybe 40%-50% of the day. I'm very lucky that I am only like a 2 on that tinnitus scale, but I'm also a musician and my ears are finely tuned AND IT IS ANNOYING.

FWIW When I first got my T I actually called the ATA and was super-disappointed too. I've heard the BTA (British) is better.

It definitely is. More treatment oriented and more on focus. I've read their literature and keep up with them. I'm not disappointed.
