Cause of Tinnitus
possibly inner ear infection
Hello people,

I am a tinnitus sufferer since more than nine months and today I am particularly concerned because it seems to get worse. I am particularly frustrated because the cause of the onset is still not clear.

Most of the time, it is a very high pitched hiss or rumbling in my left ear. It is always here but the intensity varies. It is at the lower when I wake up and it get worst until the evening. There is also variation of the intensity on a weekly basis. It is strange but when I wake up it seems less like a hiss and more like white noise. In very rare cases the pitch can also get a little bit lower for a moment.

I know for sure that the tinnitus appeared on a short period of time (I remember that a week or two before the onset, I was able to hear a perfect silence). At the time I also had a very bad cold (but without ear pain) and that's why an ear infection was suspected.

Just before the onset I also had two vaccinations (Priorix for rubella and Havrix for hepatitis A). Doctors told me that it is not related but for me it is still disturbing because the onset was only days after that. I am also concerned because I did these vaccinations VERY late (I'm 30).

At the beginning, my ENT gave me Prednisone for 10 days but it had no effects. I also had the occasion to see other ENTs and do multiple tests but everything seemed normal. One of them told me that it must be a problem with neck and jaw muscles as there was no problems with my auditory nerve but it seems hard to believe since the pitch and volume don't change when I move my jaw .

On my own, I played with a tone generator to test my audition beyond 8KHz (something ENTs don't check). I noticed that I have a small hearing loss in my left hear somewhere around 12KHz. I don't know when I lost these frequencies but since it is close to the tone of my tinnitus, I suspect it to be related.

Two months ago, I was also diagnosed with chronic sinusitis on the right maxillary sinus. As it is on the opposite side it seems unlikely to be linked with the tinnitus but I don't know.

As of today I still don't know what caused my tinnitus to begin with (virus, bacteria, sinusitis, jaw and neck problems, ...). My main concern is the following: If the tinnitus was caused by a virus, is it possible that it is still present in my inner ear and is it able to cause more damage? As for now, none of the ENTs proposed me an antiviral treatment.

I wonder if anyone had a similar experience or can give me any advices.

Thanks a lot and good luck to all of you.

My tinnitus started out due to an inner ear infection/vertigo. Ear infections are delicate issues and could take some time to fully heal. I was always in contact with my ENT and was doing all that was needed to get rid of the ear infection.

It takes time for this matter to settle, I hope you feel better....

Thanks a lot for your answer.

Did your ENT checked for viruses or gave you an antiviral treatment? Did your tinnitus get better since the onset?

After nearly a year and a lot of appointments I am a little bit lost between the different diagnostics. If it is an ear infection I am afraid that after nine months the damage is permanent.

Thank you for your support.
