Noise Exposure
Ok so this is something I thought I would never experience again in my life. My tinnitus is now barely audible and when I plug my ears it is like a distant faint murmur in the background. I still can't quite believe it.

Basically as the title says, eating 8 bananas a day seems to have got me to this point.

The reason how I found this out was by pure accident. You know when you have a bunch of bananas sitting there and they go all spotty and you know very soon they will turn to mush and most of the time you don't eat them and throw them out?

Well, this was a day for me on 6th February. Instead of throwing them away, I decided to eat them up that day. As I got to the end of the day I was sitting down and realized that my tinnitus was ever so slightly lower in volume than usual. I thought maybe I am relaxed as it was the weekend, and then it clicked what I had done differently that day and like a lightbulb going off I thought to myself "no way, this fruit can't be can it?".

So the next day I went out and brought the same bananas (pack of 8) and made sure they were that spotty looking type of large bananas and organic, which I always try to buy. Over the course of that day I did the same thing, only I staggered the eating of them so I had 2 every 3 hours. So 2 bananas at 9am, 2 bananas at 12pm etc. Again, the tinnitus stayed at the same level. I did the same thing again on day 3 and this time the tinnitus had dropped again slightly lower by the evening. I was in shock.

I am currently on day 15 and as I am writing this I am in near practical silence. The irony is I don't even like bananas that much but I am eating them now with a huge smile on my face. I have not changed anything else in my diet so I can only imagine this has been the thing doing it for me. My tinnitus before this was reactive, intrusive, constantly changing tones, beeps and zaps. I still can't believe it.

I looked up why these may be working and apart from the obvious vitamins in them I have no idea why but I am not complaining one bit. I will keep this going and update if anything changes, positive or negative. Just thought I had to share this!

I wonder if supplementing potassium would give you similar results. I've heard it linked to the production of aldosterone which is protective of hearing.

Just thought I had to share this!
Hi @DavidTyl -- Congratulations on your major improvements, and thank you for sharing! My first thought was it was the high levels of potassium in bananas, but it could be other factors as well. I myself recently noticed a modest decrease in my tinnitus from drinking Pau D'Arco tea. I'd been running into articles on how it's so good for so many things, I thought I'd order some. Never thought it might decrease my tinnitus intensity. Below is the Amazon link where I ordered mine.

Pau D'Arco ALL-NATURAL HERBAL TEA 200 Bags 1 LB (Tabebuia Impetiginosa) (inner bark) - Approximately 200 Individual Tea Bags Bulk (16 oz) Caffeine Free

Lol I just ordered this tea and Potassium pills. I'll try anything.

I'm going to try this for hyperacusis. Will report back.

@GBB -- It's a 1 lb. 200 tea bag order, which is a lot; I hope you like it! I often mix it with other teas to get a variety of tastes, but it tastes pretty decent all by itself. It almost has a slight cinnamon taste to it, and I actually upped the taste by adding a little cinnamon. Just a little suggestion if you're up for experimenting. -- Or you could blend it up with uh, er, bananas, or something like that. ;)

I'll like it if it even marginally reduces my tinnitus. Thanks.

@GBB, crazy enough, the supplement isn't a lot, there's more in a Banana (350mg) so I'd figure bananas help (they do seem to help the ringing).

More potassium concentration = higher leakage across cell = hyperpolarization to a point. It can also stop your heart.

Ya I see the pills I got are about 100mg and a banana is multiple times that. I'm told that's because potassium becomes fatal at a high enough level so they make the pills small.

Honestly, that's hilarious. Did you ever think you'd say the sentence "Basically, eating 8 bananas a day seems to have got me to this point" with dead seriousness?

Extremely happy for you, savor that feeling for all of us! We'll get there some day!

So can you die from bananas then?
Technically yes but you would probably get full before that happened. If you have pure potassium though which is a fraction of the mass/volume, you can see how someone dumb might OD. Case in point, there are plenty of cases of people ordering caffeine powder, ignoring the dosage on the container, and dying due to just eating a tablespoon, which is the equivalent of like 100 cups of coffee.

Hm, when I ate a lot of bananas (2 a day, almost everyday) my tinnitus was quieter too...

Maybe it's a coincidence, but I would try eating more of these again.

Be careful guys if you have diabetes, bananas have a lot of fructose! 8 bananas a day is about 100 g of sugar (teaspoon is 5 g).

@DavidTyl - what is the rest of your diet like?
Hi Keith, my diet is pretty average. I try to eat well but like us all, I have microwave meals and enjoy my pizzas/burgers. I try to eat my fruits/veggies but with the fruits I found a lot of the times I would buy them with good intention but then not eating them, hence this discovery. Hope all is well for you.

So you have been eating 8 bananas a day since February 6th?

Alert: -- I told my wife about this thread, and the first thing she said is that bananas can cause constipation! o_O

@DavidTyl You mention that your tinnitus before this was reactive, intrusive, constantly changing tones, beeps and zaps. Now - near practical silence 1/10 after having tinnitus for over three years. What number do you think your tinnitus was before starting to eat bananas?

There's studies of tinnitus participants who eat bananas, maintained the optimum level of potassium to preserve hearing. These studies also stated that eating bananas did not lower tinnitus hearing loss tinnitus. I recommended eating potatoes before because studies have discussed that potassium and magnesium may help preserve hearing in a controlled environment. Magnesium may also help a bit or temporary with somatic physical tinnitus. Bananas do contain some magnesium.

So you have been eating 8 bananas a day since February 6th?
Hi Toledo, I can certainly say a big yes to this! Staying hydrated I have found helps with the intake of them a lot and also doing some light moving throughout the day to keep the calories burning. I have said to myself, what would I prefer, problematic tinnitus or something the same everyday that seems to eliminate it? There is no choice really in my eyes! Also for now, if it ain't broke I ain't fixing it! Maybe in the near future I will experiment with banana smoothies and even banana cake just to mix it all up.
