Tinnitus Fading 1.5 Years After Onset

No, TV doesn't mask my tinnitus. I can hear it even in a crowded bus. My tinnitus reacts to external sounds. If the external noise becomes louder, the tinnitus increases. When the external noise decreases, my tinnitus does not decrease immediately. Sometimes it decreases after 6 hours, sometimes after days.
I am so sorry for you. We have to be strong and patient... I do put my hopes up for some kind of relief from the medications in the pipeline. Only to feel very sad if nothing works...

Hi, unfortunately I have been struggling since last time I posted. After 4 months of doing so well my tinnitus has come back with vengeance, for no reason. All the improvement that (I thought) I had achieved was lost in a matter of days and now I feel I am back to square one: desperate, exhausted, hopeless. Scratch my success story, tinnitus is an endless losing war.
Hi Gee82, I'm really sorry to hear about your setback :(.

2020 has really been a trying year, perhaps there are some (minor) causes of worry that could've triggered your spike?

In my case, I've noticed that dwelling on could've beens and day-to-day hardships (work, arguments, etc) tend to worsen my tinnitus.

When this goes on for too long, I get stuck in a vicious circle of stress -> tinnitus -> more stress -> more intense tinnitus.

Sometimes this can be hard to break out of, but what helps me is doing something I enjoy, such as preparing a really nice meal for myself, followed by watching a movie.

Perhaps there's something that could help you relax a little? Again, I'm sorry about your setback. I hope you'll swiftly recover once more.

Thanks for your kind words. My tinnitus doesn't seem to respond to anything I do nor any stress/emotion, actually it's completely out of control.

How is it now – any difference from your last post?

My tinnitus is still bad. I was hoping it would plateau over time, but instead it keeps changing for worse. It has become more intrusive, less maskable and I have the feeling that more tones are slowly invading my brain. I feel more miserable every day. I hope you are in a better place.

Sorry about that. :(

Interesting that it changed like that from getting better to worse again. May I ask what your acoustic trauma consisted of? If you want to talk about it, that is...

I'm in a somewhat manageable situation, but still sad every day since even if I have periods during the day when forget about my new (one month and a week) high pitched, sometimes a little oscillating, tinnitus that I managed to get on top of my previous hum and tone, I'm still reminded of it many times during the day.

Not to highjack the thread, but if anyone recognizes what happened to me I'd be happy to know more. Posted about it here, but no response yet:

Two-Second "Warped Chirp" in Ear While Listening to Music at Night — Then New High-Pitched Tinnitus

Really hope your sounds will ease out again and stay there! Hoping scientific research finds a cure for all this as soon as possible. Good news is there seems to be more focus on it than ever.

My tinnitus had a very weird evolution indeed. I have no idea why it got better and then 10 times worse.

As for my acoustic trauma, it was caused by a yell in my left ear by my husband (he didn't mean to hurt me). On top of suffering from the tinnitus, I have been suffering deeply from how this has happened, it still feels like an unreal evil joke to me.

It's good that you can forget about your tinnitus sometimes, I hope it stays that way for you or even improve until some treatments come up. I have read your post, sorry no idea about the chirps; however I'd suggest not to insert toilet paper in your ears, but rather go for proper foam earplugs.

I can understand how it feels like an "unreal evil joke". :(

I feel the same about my latest high pitched tinnitus – while struggling with the other two sounds I had I managed to get a new one that's much worse and some slight high pitched hearing loss at that. The other two sounds I had were nothing compared to this new one.

I agree about the toilet paper, but the thing is the music volume I was listening to was really low, so I didn't think it would be a problem even without it. But at the same time I did realize something was wrong – otherwise I wouldn't have put anything at all in my ear. Still, I wouldn't have known things would end up with that "warp 2-second chirp" and then a new tinnitus + hearing loss. I should have just taken a proper break from music at night.

But thanks for the best wishes and likewise hoping things will get better! And hoping for quick progress on research curing this many times insane situation that so many have to deal with all the hours being awake.
