My name is Joe. I turned 80 last year. My tinnitus is due to hearing loss from years of working in the noisy environment of electrical generating stations. Hearing protection was provided but wasn't always used consistently.
After 30 years, in 1996, I changed my career path and entered the medical device industry. It was around this time that I first noticed a ringing in my ears. In 2010, I made another career change into elementary school education, serving as both a principal and a special education teacher. In the classroom, I began having difficulty hearing soft-spoken students, and the tinnitus became more pronounced.
Hearing tests revealed a range of hearing loss, which I was told was the cause of my tinnitus. I was prescribed hearing aids to address both the hearing loss and tinnitus, but they had little to no effect on the tinnitus. Over time, it gradually worsened, especially during stressful situations.
I believe the word is "habituate," and I think I naturally accomplished that over the years—until recently. I had learned to live with the condition, but it has recently spiked, becoming more pronounced and disrupting my sleep for the first time. This has led me to take a closer look at the cause and possible solutions.
