Cause of Tinnitus
Histamine intolerance
7 years ago tinnitus hit me like a brick wall.

Over the years I've lost weight. I've had insomnia, fatigue, skin issues, sore joints, imbalance, headaches, sore tired muscles, anemia, low vitamin D, mood swings, OCD, and other ailments.

I've lost count of the number of Doctors I have seen. And creams and tablets I've paid for. Prior to this I was fit and healthy.

So I get my medical records and after studying them for hours by myself, I find a common link between my ailments and Histamine intolerance.

After 9 days on 60 mg of antihistamine, my tinnitus has never been this low. I've had no headaches, my skin is the clearest it has been in for years, no fatigue, and I have more energy.

The last 7 years have been a living hell.

Every day over the last nine days I have seen and felt improvements. I have lowered the dose to 40 mg.

I hope this may be of help to others.

Yes, how did you figure this out and why couldn't the doctors help? You shouldn't have had to suffer for 7 years! What kind of antihistamine did you take?

Wow, congratulations on finding the root cause of your ailments, including tinnitus! I'm sorry that you had to suffer for so long before getting relief. It's criminal that doctors don't make the effort to help people figure this stuff out.

In case this helps anyone else, I recently read about two different women who had hearing issues including hyperacusis greatly improve after going on a low histamine diet and/or taking an antihistamine.

After going through my medical reports I had a list of 19 ailments as well as tinnitus All had appeared over a ten year period. Histamine intolerance shows these symptoms. I started on 60 mg of Hydroxyzine hydrochloride. I'm down to 40 mg in nine days. And I've tweaked an already good diet. Speak to your GP.

I think I might have histamine intolerance from an antidepressant (that has antihistamine effect) I've been taking for 3 years. Antihistamines are not meant to be taken everyday for long periods of time, as that can really cause problems in the body, so be careful.

Thank you. I've found what I believe to be a good natural antihistamine. Stinging nettle leaves. I have lowered the dose already.

Are they in pill form? How much do you take? What foods did you eliminate from your diet. I eat a lot of avocados.

I just had a look at the symptoms of histamine intolerance. Most of the population would be able to pick at least several things of the list. *Sigh* I am just so overwhelmed. All the different diets, I literally don't know what to eat which is why I have lost 11 kg since mid January. I'm just not eating.

Hi @AliasM -- I also had a very hard time eating in the beginning of my tinnitus--at least the first several weeks. Fortunately, I discovered early on that I could eat homemade bone broth (made with organic bones), with egg yolks mixed in. Besides having a very calming effect on my system, it also served as an extremely nutritious base diet for me until I was able to gradually start eating more and more other foods. -- Everybody's body and situation is unique, but if you could somehow find your own base food that could provide some kind of nutritional foundation for you, it could go a long for toward you finding what works well for you in the longer run. -- Take care!

I haven't used the nettle leaves yet. I'm going to drop my antihistamine to 20mg next week. I removed strawberries, kiwi, lemon, and lime from my diet. Also green and black tea. Replaced with camomile and peppermint. I don't eat avocado.

Speak to your GP. And a dietitian. We are all different. This is what is working for me.

Yes. Everything I eat now is fresh. No tinned food. Nothing in plastic and no processed food. As meat and fish age the bacteria form histamine. As well as some fruits. A healthy gut is key.

In my case my skin has been hit hard by histamine intolerance. My scalp became tight with random spots. This in turn affected the pressure points and nerve endings. My tinnitus was always a 5 or above. Most days 8 to10 on the scale. It's now sitting at a 2. I'm in the U.K., none of the GPs in my practice have any knowledge of histamine intolerance. I've been 10 kg underweight for 7 years. I've started to put weight back on.

Thank you. I am prepared to try anything. I have been gluten free for a month but I see no real improvement. I'll give gluten free one more week and then move to this diet. Thank you.

Thanks, my nutritionist and my GP are both traditional. They do not know much about vitamins, minerals or alternative diets unfortunately.

I think that's going to be me any day now. I already am at a low weight for some mysterious reason (doctors can't figure it out, used to gain just looking at food), and feel that histamine, and maybe oxalates, and maybe lectins, are having a bad effect on the tinnitus and, perhaps, sleep quality, and paresthesia. I think eggs will be alright, though! ;) Hope you get some answers soon.

Thanks so much for posting! I'm glad you found answers. This has been a particularly rough day, following a breakfast of an orange, some almonds, and coconut. I've been looking into histamine being a culprit for a while. Sometimes it can be kind of confusing, for example, some say coconut is problematic, and some say it isn't.

Is there a website and/or book you like that is especially helpful in navigating the low histamine lifestyle?
