The vestibular system's equivalent of tinnitus—that is, a phantom sensation—seems to be a fairly rare topic of discussion and research.

As I understand it, tinnitus in the auditory system is often attributed to overactivity in the cochlear nuclei due to a loss of signal somewhere between the cochlea and the cochlear nuclei. This makes me curious: if a similar mechanism occurred in the vestibular nuclei, creating overactivity and a phantom sensation due to signal loss, what would we experience?

Would it result in vertigo, nausea, vibrations, a sensation of falling, or something else?
