Tinnitus Loudness Scale?

I don't know how loud my T is on a scale but it bothers me 24 7 no matter what I'm doing. My mind can be on it or not, doesn't make a difference, I hear it loud and clear. Also nothing really masks it, noise seems to just make it louder.
have you tried white noise?

Is the chart in the below thread the one people use for reference of the tinnitus noise on a scale of 10?

No, there is no standardized chart that I know of.
Even that chart doesn't seem properly designed for a variety of reasons.

The standardized tests are described here.
To express intensity, doctors use a Visual Analog Scale with patients reporting a subjective intensity.
For more accurate sound level measurements, audiologists can do a volume match with calibrated equipment: this is what is used in scientific studies that focus on the impact of treatments on volume.

I hate the THI so damn much. It answers literally nothing of value about tinnitus.

I don't like these type of charts as it's so subjective, I think somebody's emotional state should be included as well.... that being said I probably started off at a 3 now I'd say I'm a 6 due to this annoying beep beep bloody sound.

Is there some other scale that people use when they say 4/10 or whatever?

From this chart, in the first few weeks, I had most days at 6 some 4's, and at best at night was a 2 (but could be higher). I could also hear in loud rooms (7), though the loud room was "louder" - it's just impossible to mask 10kHz noise with room noise.

But I wonder what other chart or reference is in use...or if this is the main one.

Thankfully it seems to be quieter now, but I want to try to get a grip on the scales in use.

Thanks

I am a 9 according thiso this scale.

Mine changes around from 2 to 5 or 6...

This night at 3am or 4am was a 0 but as it is reactive by 8am when I wake up it's already a 2.

Usually at night is a 5.

Mine is a 3-4 fluctuation
I have hearing loss (which is mostly distortion in upper frequencies and hyperacusis amplifying other frequency noises) it ruins music and my life.

Using this scale, during the first 2 months or so after onset, my T was around 8.7...

What is it now @Bill Bauer

Mine used to be:

September 23-29: 7/10
October 1-10: 6/10
October 11-27: 5/10 with spikes going to 7/10.
November 1-7: 4/10
November: 7-28: 3/10
December 1-January 15: 2/10 every day with spikes going to 7/10.
January 16: 3/10
January 17: 4/10
January 18: 5/10
January 19: 6/10
January 20: 7/10
January 21: 8/10
January 22: 9/10
January 23-Feb 3: 10/10 Extreme Tinnitus, yup I had it..i can describe what this hell is...jet engine tinnitus. couldn't sleep, eat, read, watch tv, do anything..quit my job..heard it over freeway traffic..
February: Entire month was an 9/10. With new tone emerging which reduced me to tears.
March: Entire month was a 9/10
April: 90% of time its a 8 or 9/10, sometimes it would be a 6-7 out of 10, and sometimes 5/10
May: Most of the time is a 9/10
June: Most of the time its a 9/10
July: So far it has been around 9/10, the good days I had are disappearing.

@dpdx Man oh man, oh man. :sour: :arghh:

So for this thread....Mine is probably in the medium range, like 4-6. But if I go into a loud room, it typically ramps up and I still here it, so an 8 then by this chart. When I'm lucky it's in the 2-4 range. I also having varying sounds, sometimes a high pitched eeee sound, sometime cicadas, and if low volume then tends to be more of a sssss static sound.

But the chart isn't that helpful in that when in a loud room, I can hear it but the room sound is so much louder, it's not like I need a loud room to mask it. I'd say a loud room is 90+ decibels, and while I couldn't hear a pin drop, I do hear the T, which must be about 80db them. Once I get back to quiet places like 60db (or lower), the T lowers down some but I still hear it. I wonder if by this I can say my T can be tied to the ambient sound and is 10-20db less.

Mine ranges from 0, 1 and 2 in my right ear.

I'm just working hard not to let it get to a higher number. It's pretty volatile in there at the moment.

I guess currently is 2-4 depending on the day. Worst was about a 6. For sure I could go into a a noisy Starbucks and hear it above their 80-85db din.

9. Today I tried a test. I hear it in the shower. 4 windows in the car open, radio on full, cooler going, 70 mph on the highway. I hear it. A car passed me and it just got louder as if to tell me to stop testing it. 24/7. As soon as I wake up and last thing I hear at night. I never would have imagined torture like this existed. And my own brain is doing it to me. I don't have panic attacks any more. They are pretty scary at first.

Welcome to the club. Mine is like that too. Nothing (safe) masks it.

Same for me. It's super loud and oppressive. I have been doing much better lately and was looking for a document. I came across my audiogram and the ENTs recommendation for hearing aids. It brought up so much fear and anxiety compounded with the death of a close friend. Or the death of a close friend and then seeing my audiogram brought on some pan-icy feelings. I will settle down again... I have to for my family. One day at a time...

In the new year I should try hearing aids and see if they help.

GregCA do you wear hearing aids?

Sorry if my post is all over the place.

Interesting scale.. Mine was at least a 9 for the first month. At about 3 or 4 now. And here I was thinking I had it easy.. I honestly thought you all had jet engines in your brain. No wonder I ended up at the emergency room crying after 3 weeks.. And they just told me it's just tinnitus no big deal.

Mine is 9-10 for distress.

Not sure of it's actual loudness. What's considered a moderately loud room and a loud room?

Started as a 1 in year one and going up the scale by the year. On year 5 and it's a 5.

Got louder in left ear a month ago and started in the right ear 3 days ago. :(

What does "quiet room," "moderately loud room," and "loud room" mean? Are there dB levels?

How would these rooms be rated?
- Bedroom with loud vent/AC sound
- Large conference room with one presenter speaking, some paper ruffling
- Office party in large room, 20 people talking loudly, no music or other sounds

I was wondering this too. How about:
Very quiet room – Basically no obvious sounds. Windows shut.
Quiet room – No sounds except maybe a quiet computer fan or the sound a TV makes on standby. Maybe a window open with moderate bird and traffic sounds.
Moderate room – TV on medium. Big office with air conditioning and lots of computer fans plus clicking keyboards etc. 3 or 4 people talking.
Loud room – Coffee shop, restaurant or party.
Very loud room – Busy party, bar with music, etc

Is this roughly what most people were thinking?

By this scale I'd rate your examples as follows:

Bedroom with loud AC - moderate
Conference room with one person talking - quiet
Office party - probably loud, depends a bit

For me the "what kind of room can you hear it in?" scale is a little bit problematic because the pitch of the background sounds greatly affects how maskable it is. A fridge or a computer can sometimes mask it but a car engine doesn't.

Overall though I put myself at around a 4 on this scale, although could be more if I let myself focus more on it.
