Tinnitus Onset

My tinnitus came suddenly. I woke up 4 in the morning perfectly fine. Went to back to sleep and woke up 2 hours later with no hearing in my left ear. That lasted all day. The next day hearing slowly came back in my ear and the ringing started.

I had a hearing test and it said I have lost high pitched hearing, but that may have been some time ago as I think my hearing is about the same, I just have this ringing now. Also ear pain that comes and goes.

Is it common for tinnitus to happen so suddenly? I am not doing that well.

Welcome to the forum. Yes, tinnitus can come on suddenly like mine just woke me up one night with its ultra high pitch scream and stayed 7/24 scaring me to no ends. There are many causes which can trigger or aggravate tinnitus including but not limited to drug reaction or side-effects from ototoxic drugs, ear wax build-up, ear or Eustachian tube infection or ETD, ear drum injury, fluid build-up in ears feeling pressured or fullness, sinus infection & congestion, TMJ, TTTS, high blood pressure or blood circulation problem, loud noise exposure or acoustic trauma/shock, head trauma & injury, neck injury or muscle problems, hearing loss, Meniere's Decease, barotrauma from sudden change of air pressure such as during landing & taking off on flights especially with blocked nose or congested sinus causing failure to balance the rapid pressure changes, slapping of the ears, deep grief for the loss of loved ones, untreated sleep apnea, extreme or extended stress and anxiety etc., etc. So even if T seems to come on suddenly without warning, it may have the hidden cause as one or more of the above reasons. If you can identify the cause, and if it has a medical or health issue which can be treated, then T may just fade or disappear when the root cause is healed.

Does anyone know of a case where the onset of tinnitus may have been due to stress. With whatever caused the stress, if dealt with, did the tinnitus fade away or at least become less severe.

I was doing therapy (had a bad childhood) and dealing with PTSD, then this tinnitus suddenly happened.

to a doctor at the emergency, he gave me a prescription for prednisone.

"Patients who initiate oral steroid treatment more than four weeks after onset of their SSNHL have virtually no chance of oral steroid benefit."
The sooner you begin the treatment, the better. Your ENT can also do steroid shots. I don't know much about it, but you can find information about it on this site.

My tinnitus is mostly in one ear. On the same side I can make cracking sound by closing my jaw. The other side of the jaw is fine. In the morning when I turn my head side to side its as if I hear creaking sounds in my head.

Maybe jaw, its hard to tell, but the other side has no noise at all.
