Tinnitus Perception vs. Actual Volume

And then the question about perception arises. If someone else had your specific T, would that person experience the volume in the same way. If we think about it, most people experience sound differently... what some people find loud, others find acceptable and the other way around.
I think this is often overlooked. Two people can hear the exact same noise and one may find it annoying while the other simply ignores it.

For example, I used to live near a busy road. The sound of constant traffic drove me crazy. I would focus on it so much that I could not concentrate and it caused me anxiety. Meanwhile, it did not bother my spouse. His hearing was the same as mine. The cars certainly were not quieter for him than me. Honestly the only difference between us was our reaction to the noise.

Now obviously there is a volume level where anyone and everyone would be annoyed by passing traffic. But even then, some people might eventually get to a point where they ignore the noise. They might figure out a way to cope and no longer be bothered by it.

Everyone's tolerance level is different. To twist an old saying, maybe one man's mild tinnitus is another man's severe.

And this could be a sort of habituation.
My gf used to live near a train station and the bedroom was facing directly towards the rails and trains were passing day and night. The first 2-3 months or so it was impossible to get a full night sleep. But eventually, we both habituated and slept like babies even with the window open.

This is why many thinks that if you can convince your brain that T is not dangerous, it will not kill you etc. you should also be able to habituate. But, the thing with T is that it´s constant. I´d like to see a person wearing a sound device producing a T-like sound... Would that person habituate?

Come on guys, don't take it so seriously. It was just humoristic. What's the big deal?

It may not be a big deal to you but I was brought up to behave in a certain way and stand by what I said. There is a time and a place for everything. This forum is mainly for helping people with tinnitus and isn't the right place for such language.

That's fine but you must know that people like vermillion and I haven't been like that. The fact is most millenials and gen Z don't care about cussing, that means new people to this forum. Even if it's a support forum, it's still a forum on the internet and there is cussing all over the internet. Going around telling people to not cuss is worse than actually cussing.

That and cussing is a spook. "Willy" and "penis" aren't bad words either.

Engaging in humour, people making me laugh or me making them laugh, is one way I manage to cope with my tinnitus. As they say laughter is the best medicine. Paulmanlike

Michael sometimes it's not bad to get a bit out of context as long as you don't swear/insult someone. I believe throughout the forum you can find way shitty stuff/insults etc. that have being traded among members and that are really unacceptable. We all have different sense of humour, personally i found it light & funny and at that moment i just smiled reading it, forgetting a bit my misery. I don't think this kind of intimacy is a bad thing for a support forum. Anyway that's just my personal opinion. No hard feelings ;)

@vermillion
Whilst you may not have thought the content of the post inappropriate, one must try to remember others people on the forum may not share that view. I say again, there is a time and a place for everything.

I hope this matter can be put to rest now.
