Tinnitus Since
8/13
Hi,
This is my first post as i dont read the forums much.
i have had tinnitus for 2 years.i would say that at times it couldn't be any worse.my t is multi tonal to even wind noises or mechanical machinery.
have had the usual mri,ent appointments etc etc. Sorry cant do anything for you rubbish.
am at present having therapy.my tinnitus was just so loud.
I have had the usual benzos in the early stages and numorous other pills.
so i heard that anti depressants can reduce the loudness.i wasnt expecting any results.
i was finally prescribed my 3rd anti depressant even though i am not depressed and i have been amazed .
i am taking mirtazapine at the starting 15mg dose.this can be increased to 30 then 45mg.
my tinnitus has been reduced by a great deal sometimes 50 to 75 per cent.its been 4 weeks now.
I would say that your body sorts out the tinnitus so you cope better as time goes on but this med has made a massive difference when all else failed.
If your tinnitus is bad maybe it will help you too.
If you go to your GP and give it a try then come back to this thread as i would love to know if it helps anyone else.
All the best

Mirtazapine? I tried that, no effect on tinnitus. Anyway, what other drugs did you try? SSRI's normally don't do much for tinnitus, as tinnitus is more GABA, calcium channel blockers and potassium channel modulators. Glad it helped you though.

@p44
Some report Remeron caused their T, some report it helps.
Here in Germany, Remeron/Mirtazapine is widely given to T patients.
It had no effect on my T so far.
But I am experimenting a little bit in a way to taking it at different times a day.
For a long time, I took 30 mg or 45 two hours before sleeping. I slept 8-9 hours like a stone.
Now I take 15 mg some minutes before I go to bed and 15 mg directly after I wake up (helping me going through the tough morning hours).
I will report back if it has any effect on my T.
How do you take it and how does it lower your T?

Hi,
the funny thing is the starting dose is 15mg at bed time as ut makes you sleep....because it worked so well for me i upped it to 30 but immediately had a reverve affect and made the reverse affect.
for me the optimum dose is the starting dose of 15mg. Tried sertraline which made my t spike.so not all give the desired affect.
forgot to say that you have to take mirtzapine for 2 weeks before you can see improvement.
p44

Thought that upping the dose would give twice the affect but i was wrong so have gone back to 15mg before bed. Dont forget that these pills need time and dont straight away.
i would say that my t is just lowered in general which is great.
my t was so intrusive it really had a bad affect on my life.
Because my t has dropped below that level that makes you whole body on edge i seemed to be alot less bothered by it which inturn lowers the anxiety.i seem to be breaking out of that cycle.
Hey artistic, like i said a low dose had a better affect that the higher dose.
all the best

last night i took 12 g mirtazipine and 0.5 klonopam ? sleep well. but wake up with bigest T that ususaly .usualy i taking just 0.5 klonopam and 25 voldoxan but not sleep well. so what do you think continue mirtazipine or quit it ? in time mirtazipine can increase or reduse T ? or maybe somebody tryed 50 voldoxan, how it is works ?

We need good simple natural sleeping pills for sleep and leave anxiety pills for the day time when we really get it , a ny body have info on good natural sleeping pills , need to try and detoxify our self form pills , they gave me lorazepam .05 to take that does not help me sleep good for anxiety during the day , but I believe if we fall with natural stuff we might not have these middle of the night spikes that wakes us up , come you guys spit it out somebody has a good natural sleeping pill please tell us.

Dam if you don't or dam if you do! Well now my world of tennitus is blasting oft to taking Mirtazapinn! My doctor prescribed it after we had a nice visit about where I was at in my world of t's. I'm going to start probably tonight with a haft a tab 15mg. That will be abou 7.5 mg and being I'm on Zanax I will cut that pill down to 3/4. Has anyone here been on Zanax and than started a regiment of Mirtazapinn ? I'm kind of concerned about the effects of the two drugs! But if it helps my anxity well I will be happy camper. Oh yes last night I took two melitonin 6 mg and I'm oft that stuff as it causes the most dreadful dreams I have had. So that's it and now to go down the rabbits hole to see what happens.

I've been taking Mirtazapine 15 mg for two weeks now. My doctor prescribed them when I was in a very bad state, feeling suicidal from constant high pitched tinnitus. So far they make me sleep like a log most nights, and also eat like a horse. The jury is still out about it helping with tinnitus as there has certainly been an improvement, but I've also been taking 5mg Valium almost daily and this is known to lower most cases of tinnitus. I only have a limited supply of valium left as the doctor gave them me as an emergency measure, so it'll be interesting (and scary) to see what happens when I have only Mirtazapine to rely on. If only there was a none addictive drug as affective at reducing tinnitus as Valium is! A big part of the solution to treating T seems to be calming the central nervous system. Maybe there is a natural herbal remedy potent enough to bring about at least some of the calming influence of Valium which will reduce tinnitus volume in the same manner?

You were right, Marlino. The doctor put me up to 30mg mirtazapin and it's caused a major spike... have gone back down to 15mg and might try to keep on it as my depression is a bit better (today anyway).

Well for me its the same my Tinnitus was getting better right around the time I started Mirt.
I have been taking it for 1 year now and decided to stop 2 weeks ago the see if i could lose weight more easily without them. I went from 15 mg to 0 mg and the next 3 days where horrible and my T got really worse. I decided to start Mirt again yesterday the first night was a bliss and today T was much lower. I hope that in time it goes back to the low stat it was when i was on Mirt. I really don't know if its Mirt that is lowering my T or if it has a effect on my depression and anxiety with it lowers the T. Really no idea. I just know that Mirt is really great! I encourage people to try it. The first week you take it it might make things worse but give it Time. The daytime drowsiness passes in 2 - 3 weeks. I would suggest that you start with 7,5 mg and go up to 15 mg. When i took 30 mg things got worse.

I hope that helps someone.

Cheers,

Chris

My Dr started me on 15 mg Mirtazapine ,one tablet a day . It caused my T to become insanely louder ! Had to stop taking it. I find that any drug that makes me tired causes a massive increase in T levels.

Well the first time i took it it made my T louder too. But then again that question is did the medication make your T louder or was it your fear that the medication could make your T louder. I my case it was fear after a couple of good nights it improved.

Start with 7.5 mg and then see what happens :) if you chose to give it another go.

Very interesting...Remeron had me "jacked up" at 15mg which is weird because most people say it makes them sleepy at this dose and then when they go to 30 they get more energy. The other thing it did was have an effect on my T more than any other drug and it raised the level. I wonder if I had of taken 7.5mg instead my T might have got lower or possibly a lower dose than that...hmm I also wonder if it is lowered in some people due to Remeron's action on the H1 histamine receptor.

Found this case report: http://neuro.psychiatryonline.org/doi/pdf/10.1176/appi.neuropsych.11040086

Mirtazapine (Remeron) is odd because its sedative effect decreases with higher doses. Many will find it effective for inducing sleep at doses as low as 7.5mg which is likely far too low for any meaningful antidepressant effect. While some find it relieves tinnitus, I suspect it is the anti-anxiety effect that numbs the mind's initial overreaction to the scary onset of T. Either way, if it is recommended by your doctor it may be worth a try, but discontinuance should be done by a gradual tapering under a doctor's supervision.

@Ford - valarian root, melatonin and magnesium are natural supplements known to help some with insomnia, but I find deep breathing and meditation to be most helpful in distracting the mind and getting to sleep.

What dose do you take?

I took 7.5mg in the evening. I had a long sleep and then had a better day the following day. My good day was yday. I didn't take any last night though. I'm going to take it sporadically though. When my T gets insane.

It could be getting some good uninterrupted sleep does the trick...who knows.

So you have only taken it once? Can't really conclude anything out of that.

I have taken it a few times before. I think it's the good sleep rather than anything else.

I'm having a really tough day today. The ringing is just so loud.

I started Mirtazapine 6 days ago. It's early days, but it definitely helps me sleep better.

I've only had tinnitus for 5 weeks so I'll probably try anything at this stage.

My psychiatrist gave me a script last week for Mirtazapine. Not for depression because I'm not depressed, but for sleep. I decided not to take it though. I searched this forum and Facebook posts and it seems to have made so many people worse. I am already suicidal from severe tinnitus and I wouldn't survive a worsening.

After reading this though, maybe 7.5 mg might be a good starting point. I have been prescribed 15 mg.

I was scared too after reading stories here but the truth is out of all the ADs available Mirtazapine is the least ototoxic.

In my case I couldn't sleep at all without benzos, and given those are not sustainable in the long run, I decided to take Mirtazapine because honestly I was suicidal at that point from sleep deprivation and had nothing to lose.

I take 30 mg now to help also with tinnitus-induced depression and it works quite well so far. Tinnitus is unchanged and my hyperacusis has improved thanks to the extra sleep I get.

How is watching TV for you?

Does music sound the same to you like it used to?

Does your tinnitus ever seem to distort external sounds?

I get curious how TV is for others with severe tinnitus. I don't remember if I have asked you this.

Honestly, I don't watch TV or listen to music. I never have. Always liked my peace and quiet. It is the absolute truth that the last time I sat and watched TV on purpose was the 2011 London Olympics! I have watched some YouTube clips on my tablet though and I was able to follow ok.

I have echo and distortions in my left ear, that react to certain pitches and my own voice.

I haven't tried listening to music. All I listen to is crickets and creeks! People say listen to a fan at night. Well I have a ceiling fan which I cannot hear because my head is so noisy and my hearing is fine. No hearing loss (at least not in the standard testing range).

I speak with one lady on Messenger. She blames starting Mirtazapine as the cause of her tinnitus going from mild to severe after 10 years of having it, and hyperacusis going from non existent to so bad that she hasn't left the house in 4 years. Scares the shit out of me.

My tinnitus kind of makes it hard to hear some stuff like traffic and people talking at a distance or even the TV in another room, i.e. I can't clearly hear the TV in another room over the tinnitus. I never have to look for it to hear it over anything. I miss hearing what a fan sounds like.
