Hello, I am a teen who's had tinnitus since birth, and I don't know why. We've visited neurologists, ENT's, pediatricians, had MRI's, CAT scans, X-rays, blood tests, basically if you can name it, it's been done. Nothing.

In January 2016 I experienced a dramatic increase in volume, (3-4 times louder) and I am getting to the point where I can't sleep or concentrate anymore. It's worsening my already bad depression, (also since birth) and I feel as if it's slowly driving me insane. Does ANYONE have tips to reduce the volume?

I've tried many supposed "remedies" but all have failed.

At this point, I'm desperate for anything to help.

The only advice that anyone can give is this,
-Reduce your stress and anxiety
-Protect your ears
-Try masking find something that suits you
-Keep busy and focus your attention elsewhere

All the usual bull you've probably heard a thousand times by now

I suggest you look up Julian Cowan Hill on YouTube for good tips and info,I hope this helps but at the moment there is still no effective treatment or cure.

how is your hearing ?

My hearing is actually fine, oddly enough. Since the spike it's been harder to focus on quieter sounds, but other than that no issue.
Damn what was it like as a small child?
Im just curious
It was... Interesting. To say the least. I would always ask my parents what the ringing was, and I wondered why they acted confused. I asked why they were confused and was told they didn't hear it. It was only in the past few years I brought it up again because I thought it was normal, and only recently (3-4 years ago) was told it wasn't.

I'm sorry to hear about your situation. I too have had T since birth. I am 46 now. I found out as a young child when I asked someone if the ringing was louder for them at night in bed. "What ringing?" I assumed everyone's ears were like mine. Like you, I've never experienced life without ringing (mine is around 7500hz).

bill 112 gave great advice.

I also have hyperacusis.

I find being in loud environments jacks up the volume of my T for days afterward.

I am much more aware of my T during times of stress.

Enjoy life as much as you can; easy to say, hard to do....

Relaxing is harder for tinnitus sufferers. It was a true revelation for me when an audiologist explained that tinnitus is tied into or triggers the fight or flight response. Our brains are continually on high alert. How does a person feel when they hear a high pitched smoke alarm humming their ears? It's similar for us on some level 24/7.

Relieving stress and relaxing in healthy ways is huge.
