2 weeks ago I moved into my new uni accommodation. At night I realised there was a weird buzzing sound coming from somewhere, I assumed it was the pipes in the new building and turned on the fan and slept.

The following week I went home and the sound followed me, I got very stressed because it was coming from my head not the pipes. This sound is also reactive to any external noise, but the weird thing is it stops when I plug my ears.

I am really hoping this will go away, I have had noises appear in the past but they went away within a week. This one is a different sound, and it's been 2 weeks.

Does anyone know why this is happening or have had it happen to them and it's gone?

I don't listen to loud music at all, haven't used headphones in a year, no loud music, no cinemas etc only thing is I take Sertraline but I've taken that for months now with no worsening of my pre existing tinnitus, so I doubt it's that. Supplements wise, everything has been the same for months, after the noise appeared I started taking Ginkgo biloba but that hasn't helped yet.

- Does the buzzing also go away when someone is talking to you (buzzing may continue in between words)?
- Does the buzzing go away when you shake your head in a "no" fashion?
- Does the buzzing go away when you put your ear on your arm (I sometimes sleep that way)?

Yes it somewhat goes away when I shake my head.

It doesn't go away if I put my head on my arm, or on my pillow.

I think it goes away when someone's talking, so yes.

I am hoping this is a temporary sound. I've never had a spike before. How long have you had this sound?
