Tinnitus Since
02/2015
Hello everyone ! Attended a disco party last night after a long time, and stood right next to one of the speakers. I felt there was something wrong inside, but by the time I got outside my T was much much louder and my ear drums had that full sensation as well as irritated. 12 hours after that it feels the same. Could this be permanent or could it revert back to the mild T I have been having for 9 months now ? I have been tested before and do not T due to hearing loss. I attended clubs before with loud music and never had this issue. After my T appeared I was afraid to do that anymore and this is the first time I went.
Thanks a lot for your support !

Hope it settles down for you soon and it will a bit in time.
Try not let all the unwanted emotions take hold as anxiety will feed your tinnitus too.

I went a party last night and took out my hearing aid as would amplify the music.
We sat at the back by the patio doors and a quiet area.
By ears blast 24/7 and never stops but wanted make sure I didn't cause any ear damage.
Had a great night....lots of love glynis

Pretty loud I guess, as other people were annoyed too. Before my T appeared I never had issues with loud music. Now my ear drums seem irritated too and this music just made it worse ! First time I went out since my T appeared 9 months ago. Does this mean I will be permanently restricted from loud music ?

without earplugs yes definately!

Does this mean my ears are permanently irritated ? It certainly seems so since my T appeared. And I can feel both ears pulsating when exposed to loud noise.
I was initially prescribed some cortisone drops to apply locally by the ENT. Would they be worth trying now ?

Music when clubbing is dangerously loud, and by dangerously i mean it can HURT you ears. That's what happened to you.

I do not understand how did you think you would be safe clubbing without earplugs. ..

Well I had no idea as before T I never had this issue. Also since I was tested and have no hearing loss, I don't understand why noise makes T worse, since my T is not noise induced ?

Just because you were tested DOES NOT mean that you have no hearing loss. You simply have no hearing loss that can be detected by the audiogram. I am the exact same way, but am almost certain that my T was noise induced (came directly after a concert). NEVER go to a loud event like a club or concert again without protection. Praying that this spike goes down for you, but please be protect yourself so that it does not get worse!

48 hrs later my T seems to be back to the initial state, thank God !!!!! Will never make that mistake again not to wear ear plugs. This thing really changes your life. I never thought before of the necessity to wear ear plugs and now it seems they are really a must have if you go clubbing !

Hi emerald2015,
Your ears are obviously not happy round loud sound and glad to hear your ears have settled down again.
Make sure you keep plugs handy and don't feel daft wearing then as its the others who need the protection too .
You can get clear plastic noise reduction ones so easy to hide if have short hair.....lots of love glynis

Hi @emerald2015

First of all I am really happy for you that everything went back to base...

I must say though that your thread really made me think, as recently I tried going clubbing (with earplugs) for the real first time since I developed my T... and what happened to you is exactly my biggest T-related fear...

I have been dreaming of going to a club or a loud place without earplugs and "test" if my T would stay the same, or if it would spike, and if it would spike if it would be a temporary or permanent one...

I don't think my T came for an acoustic trauma, but rather stress and maybe other issues, and I have never had a real spike which lasted more than a few seconds since I have T, which makes me think it has nothing to do with loud places and therefore I could still go and enjoy loud places without having my T worsening...

But the real point is that I am dead curious about how my T would react but I am too scared to see for myself....
And in the meantime I realized I probably have a light hyperacusis, so clubs are out anyway :)

But your story kind of tells me that: you had a not-noise-induced T and went clubbing without earplugs and did unfortunately get a worsening on your T which thankfully resolved itself after 48 hours... So in theory it would be just a temporary spike.. I don't know why but I take a little comfort on this...

Sorry just felt like sharing.. :)

Hugs to all...

Just like Lorenzo74, my T appeared all of a sudden and it came with mild tachycardia and action tremor, very strange symptoms. I was NOT exposed to any loud noises before the T appeared, not even weeks before. I did have a whiplash from a car accident 3 months before it appeared. So that would turn the cause into a neurological one. My audiogram was perfect with no hearing loss. I am not doubting what you say but I simply don't understand why at 29 years old I need to protect from loud noises ? I definitely will though as this really scared me ! Thanks a lot !

Because you're a human being and thus your hair cells in your inner ear don't repair when blasted - age has nothing to do with that. Read any article about hearing loss and you will understand. Only because masses do sth doesn't mean they are right. And as Quentino explained to you, only because no hearing loss was detected wherever you checked it does not mean you don't have any. Given the lifestyle you describe it's more than sure you have some dead cells and with some people a few will be enough to develop T. Nobody will tell you, no doctor, why you got it. Maybe because of whiplash; maybe not. Can be those dead cells in the cochlea as well. From the moment one has T, one assumes that might be this and protects himself from noise exposure.

Noise levels in clubs can exceed 100db. Under the CDC guidelines, the safe exposure limit for sounds that loud is 15 minutes. Regardless of whether or not you have tinnitus, if you exceed those exposure levels, you're risking permanent damage to your ears and hearing loss.

Dont be so negative, it makes people not want to ask for help if all they get back is sass..

You're right.

But not in this particular case. 105db is crazy loud and dangerous for everyone. We can't just pretend it's ok to go clubbing without any protection.

I got tinnitus when I was still 19, and no more clubbing for me because it's noise induced. It's sad, but not as sad as possibility of getting severe T.

Even if you wear earplugs that doesn't mean you are 100% safe. You still have to be careful of loud sounds. Behind each ear is a hard piece of bone called the "Mastoid" bone. It is honeycombed and has air pockets. If external sound is loud enough, it can pass through the mastoid bone and enter the inner ear and irritate the cochlea and could make your tinnitus worse! Keep away from the front stage and stand clear of floor standing speakers. Loud low frequency bass can also make tinnitus worse. Go out and have fun but at the same time be careful.
