Hi Everyone,

I've always had problems with pressure and my ears (on airplanes etc), and my eardrums do have scarring on them since childhood (not sure how).

Anyway, I've always swum a lot. It relaxes me and is good exercise, and I've never had a problem swimming without earbuds. However, today I went, and I think the chlorine levels were high but otherwise the pool was very quiet. Anyway, long story short is that it spiked my tinnitus. I'm handling it, and I want to try with earbuds, but I guess I'll just be bummed that this is another thing I can't do! :( Any advice?

Wishing everyone well,
Sam

Hi @Samwise_The_Loud -- Assuming (I may be wrong) that your body absorbed some of that chlorine that's causing your tinnitus spike, I'd suggest detoxifying that chlorine from your body by doing a detox bath. The best way I know of is using an inexpensive compound called sodium thiosulfate (STS). It's normally sold in pet shops to dechlorinate aquarium water.

STS is the compound that gives sulfur hot springs their rotten egg smell. Don't know if you've ever been to one of those springs--which are reputed to have great healing qualities--but you can create your own hot springs just by buying a few pounds of the STS crystals and adding a tbsp or so in your bathtub. -- Just do a search on Amazon or eBay to check out buying options. BTW, 1 pint of this can dechlorinate 25,000 gallons of water!

Here's a link to a thread I started on STS and its potential to affect tinnitus:

Thanks for the reply @Lane! That seems to be a logical conclusion regarding chlorine levels.

To update you, my tinnitus did go back to baseline (although it is now spiking due to screaming children at Christmas).

In terms of STS, that's certainly on my radar! Might give it a try.

Thank you for your time in responding, and wishing you well in your recovery.
