Tinnitus Since
July 2013
I have posted in the past about my husband and his diagnosis of Menieres. For the past 4-6 weeks he has had a few tinnitus spikes which have woken him up during the night. Last night he was awake for almost 3 hours with one. When we thought about triggers, we associated the spike with some chips we had bought from the local chip shop before travelling last night. Sadly, there had been salt added to the chips .
In any case, today I am posting to see if anyone experiences tummy upset during a spike. I have noticed that my husband ends up almost with a nervous, windy tummy when he realises he is experiencing a spike. I suppose it could possibly be the anxiety of the spike that brings this on too. Just wondering if anyone else experiences similar side effects too.

Hope you are all doing as well as you can. (y)

How wonderful that you are so concerned and helpful.
Sure wish my family would look around on this board.
Yes , I often have gastro intestinal issues along with spikes. For me I do believe it is stress.

I do the research for him and filter out the unnecessary stuff ! He found that 'google' and the likes were presenting worse case senarios to him when he was first diagnosed and so I offered to find the info for him and to present him with the necessary information and helpful stuff!

I am very happy to help him because when he is going through difficult phase I feel that it is my job to help him cope and to keep him positive. I hope you are okay Leah, and thanks for your reply.

I've experienced a queasy stomach as a result of the anxiety I got from severe T spikes. Which additionally caused a loss of appetite.

Hi Coco, sorry your husband having bad time with this, lot on this and other sites have a bad problem with the tinnitus / balance.Ive had it for 3yrs ,like your husband I watch salt intake, more me for high blood pressure, never gave it much thought as to my tinnitus ,reading your post I will do. Does it increase mine?Ive been told I have IBS,often think this is all tied in,like yeast infections on the inside.Try your husband on the Fodmap diet, see if that will help him. They say high fibre, but lots say that makes it worse.I use to enjoy lot of various fruits ,but no longer can.Does fruit make tinnitus spikes higher ?if I eat grapes next day my stomach and tinnitus worse, but doesn't change my balance issue, much the same every day, even kept a diary on daily food stuff I have.Thing with salt there's not much you can eat that doesn't contain traces in it ,think your great helping to find info out for your husband.Leah made good point on stress, that can be a bug bear to having tinnitus..Hope your husbands settle down again, has he had this before Coco ?if you come up with anything let us know, may help us with same issue, but salt maybe just the cause, interesting.

Hi @cocobean: Yes, I think your husband's upset stomach could be a result of anxiety as he deals with the spike. Loss of appetite/feeling queasy is a common symptom of anxiety. I lost 15 pounds in a month thanks to anxiety at the beginning of my tinnitus; couldn't eat a thing.

What helped me: Eating healthy, easily digestible foods (nothing fried, salty, very little meat), and taking an over-the-counter anti-acid (like Zantac 150) when I had symptoms. Fruit and raw veggies indeed are a problem as they do have a lot of fiber, as @Marlene said. I got a lot of my calories through fruit and veggie smoothies.

Agree with LadyDi. I was nervous as hell when T first hit. Foods? No appetite at all with the nervous stomach. I lost 10 lbs in the process but unfortunately I gained them all back when I habituated to T & the appetite was back to normal. LOL.

Hello Lady Di, what do you eat?, I eat meat, veg, lots of fiber, nuts, fruits, my t never changes, I just get the buzzing al day long, I also get dizzy all day long ..Doctors is not sure what is causing my Dizzyness.. All the best ..take care

Nausea is a common symptom of anxiety. My T started a month ago and I lost 12lbs or so in the first two weeks from nerves. Omeprazole/nexium is really helpful for me. Especially if I'm not eating much.

Hi @alifalijohn: Not nearly as careful with my diet as I was in the beginning, when anxiety ruled my life. Also, my dietary choices more involved my anxiety, not my tinnitus volume, just to be clear. When I was highly anxious, I could not eat anything that was not easily digestible. So I stayed away from fiber and red meat and stuck to stuff like smoothies. I never have noticed any foods (with the exception of caffeine) making a difference in my T volume, but we all are different. Many others report T spikes connected with food, especially spicy food.

If you are dizzy: That can be tied to Menieres disease. No salt diet is crucial for the condition. So I would try to cut as salt out of my diet. Remember that most fast foods, prepared foods and canned foods are loaded with salt.

Thank you for the information, Doc. did mri, cat scan, audio, hearing test , said I did not have meneries disease, which is good news, I do not spin .I hope I do not have meneries , my dizziness started before the T, a few month after I got T . I took an antiobitic..microbid , for an infection , and my dizziness started plus my t, I check on Google and it sadi this drug cause ringing in the ears and dizzynes, my doctor said n, nobody knows, it frustrating..All the best take care!

Ali have a look at anaemia,(general) our giddy/ balance can be a sign of it along with tinnitus. They say check ferritin levels. Its lack of iron, plus lack of folic acid. Now going to check it out.How I found this out was a lady here in UK,with this issue.fluke reading by me and came across it,checked it out and ferritin levels mentioned, could be a cause of why it's hanged around.Let me know what's your thoughts.

By the way @cocobean: I meant to mention before that your husband is blessed to have such a caring and supportive spouse. If you look on our board, you will see that not all of our members are so lucky (although many are). My husband also is 100 percent in my corner... Don't know how I would have done it without him.
