Hello,

I've had tinnitus for a year or two now, but I am just coming to terms that maybe it won't go away on a sustained basis. The odd thing is, and why I had hope was, the tinnitus does give me about a day or two of a break every week. It is:
  • Always low frequency, about as low as you can get.
  • A rhythmic "beep" but changing in frequency until it can become an continuous hum.
  • Occurs in the right ear, then both ears, then only the left ear, then nothing. The left ear is the loudest and the most depressing.
  • Stops within a fraction of a second of me speaking and resumes immediately when I stop speaking. I can hear it cut out which makes me think it isn't just being masked.
  • Audiograms show low frequency hearing loss.
  • Perforations in both eardrums and extensive use of Ciprodex almost certainly related.
  • Carbamazepine gave me some relief but only for a day or two before I kept having to increase the dosage.
Anybody else had this type of tinnitus that comes and goes throughout the week and cuts out when speaking?

Thanks.

I don't have any answers I'm afraid. What I will say is that you should cherish those days when your tinnitus goes away. Most of us on here unfortunately have to put up with tinnitus 24/7. I hope you get some improvement and I wish you well.

My tinnitus comes and goes day to day on a regular basis, although I don't have the same tinnitus characteristics as you do. For instance, mine doesn't cut out when I speak. My tinnitus is primarily in my right ear, and it's often sounds like a hiss or static or a bunch of radios being tuned. It's in the higher frequencies, and my audiogram shows moderate hearing loss in the high frequencies.

I've had it for about 21 months now, and I get 1-2 days per week when it's either gone or so low I have to go to a quiet room to hear it. The loud days really suck though, I get a loud day about once a week these days. The rest of the days are mild for me. My cycle used to be a 3-day cycle, like: loud, mild, quiet, loud, mild quiet, etc. But over time, the cycle lengthened so I get a loud day about once a week on average. Have you noticed any change in how often you get a quiet day or a loud day?

I find that my tinnitus follows a fairly regular pattern of two noisy days followed by a quiet day. Sometimes the quiet day starts from the previous evening. Having a quiet day does bring some consolation.
