TMJ and Neck Problems Causing Tinnitus

The OP post reminds me a lot of myself
Experienced almost all of what OP said, the neck issues, the same clenching of jaw making the ringing louder, the misaligned spine, the jaw changing when I was younger dew to braces & getting teeth pulled. Chiro visits, with the adjustments, did nothing for me. I did it about 5 times. My neck snaps every single time I turn it to the right. I am in a extremely similar position as tattoosteve. In the end I went to the dentist and they gave me something to wear at night, a night guard. I haven't picked it up yet but I will see if it does anything for TMJ, which I may or may not have.
Did the splint help?

If you're looking at a TMJ treatment for tinnitus you're going to be dissapointed. TMJ treatment aims to solve jaw opening/closing issue and mastication. It can also help with Jaw pain.

@Nucleo
Thanks for the response. Did you go through treatment? My ringing sound which is now a hiss started waking up one day with buzzing/ringing ears, next day i couldn't turn my neck to one side, and then I started noticing jaw clicking on my left side. All the symptoms came upon about the same time.

I did go through with the treatment but it was because my jaw kept locking and snapping. My jaw bone on that side was about 50% thinner than the other side. It didn't do anything for the tinnitus.

I wore my splint for 3 months 24/7 and it seemed like it made my neck pull so I stopped wearing it 24/7 and went for a week without it and now am just wearing it at night. tinnitus is still there too...

TMJD treatment may not be the answer for all but let's not whitewash all the tmjd dentists as all in it for the money, nor say that Nobody has ever been helped by dentists or chiropractors. My daughter had roaring tinnitus, could not even hear the tv or conversation. Long story short, TMJ splint 24/7 for 2 years slowly but surely cured her. If this was a so-called cottage industry then a great many more people (myself included) would all be wearing splints, but my TMJ specialist dentist, after a thorough examination, said that's not my problem and did not prescribe a splint. I also do personally know of people whose tinnitus was permanently terminated by chiropractic neck adjustment. I really hate to hear wholesale generalizations from professed professionals (or from anybody) just because of a difference of opinion.

Hi! Well. My ears are still ringing. And have had a little jaw pain. Lots of neck pain beginning to wonder if splint is making tinnitus worse??? at least I had a little lower and sometimes none, but now its always there:(. it was better the first 10 days, then I got splint adjusted and its been worse..

I have TMJ and have seen a specalist who made my TMJ pain much more tolerable for over a year now. I do know that I was required to visit the specalist several times a month, sometimes even multiple times a week for my splint to be adjusted/re-adjusted as even the slightest change in emotional/physical stress can change your jaw pattern. I do not know the correlation between this and Tinnitus as Im new to this journey (2 weeks in) but I do know that for TMJ splints to be succesful, they require a TON of tinkering. Don't give up on it just yet. My TMJ pain is 100% better after a year and I am so grateful.

@Isabella 123

Its good to hear about your daughter getting better with TMJ treatment. Can you tell me some of the symptoms she had. I am 2 months into T and trying to figure out a cause. Here are few things I am suffering -
1. Clicking sound on my left jaw when I open it
2. No pain in the left jaw
3. Has 3 tooth pulled out from my left jaw and at times I feel like I am biting on my tongue
4. Numb buzzing feeling on both my temples, at times pain
5. Faint pain on my forehead
6. Pain in my neck and shoulders
7. My left jaw feels inflammed at times
8. My left tongue burns

Well....thats the list I guess....any idea or suggestions, please let me know.

Did you go to the dentist and did it solve your T ?
Thanks for your help.

Best, Mita

My daughter's TMJD dentist theorized that hers developed after years of being misaligned (she wore braces a long time as a teenager). He did exhaustive X-rays and said her TMJ joint was definitely misaligned and he couldn't say for sure that fixing the problem would eliminate the tinnitus, but she did wear the realignment splint for 2 years and at the end of that time her tinnitus was pretty much gone. It was no picnic wearing it, I think, as she had lots of discomfort and discouragement but she is a persistent strong woman so she hung in there.

I don't actually know what other symptoms she had as I lived in another state at that time and she only told me about this when I developed tinnitus myself.

I went to her tmjd dentist and after my X-rays and examination he said that is not my problem and a splint would not help me in any way, so I never did it. So all I can say is, I think he was an honest professional who is not into this for money but for helping people.

I have TMJ and my T started 2 days after painful dental work. My jaw locked right after the dental work and 2 day later as I went to bed and T on for 3 months now. Vertigo, bad migraines, ear pain, jaw locked and neck pain, the last few weeks T has been 24/7 and my jaw is even worse. I went to an ENT and audiologist and my hearing and ears checked out fine. I'm now doing TMJ therapy and my night guard comes in 2 weeks. I'm not 100% my T is from TMJ but with a locked jaw and all the other TMJ symptoms all coming in at once, I think thats my best course of action.

@Isabella 123 Isabella can you please kindly give me the name of the dentist your daughter saw for her TMJ issue? It's very hard to find a good one who knows what they doing, it sounds like he knows what he's doing. I would like make an appointment with him.

Thank you so much

Wow the Home Trigger Point Therapy was amazing. I have had Tinnitus in my Left for a couple of years now. I also have Damage to my Lumbar area and Pain in my Thoracic area of my Spine. Snap crackle pop when moving my neck. I have been to Physical Therapy and it helps. The Tinnitus has been getting louder and lasting louder.
After following this Video I was surprised to find several tender muscles that hurt. The T got slightly quieter after trying this one time and my neck is more relaxed.
First post here today so hopefully more to read and understand. Hopeful to find some things that can help instead of trying another pill.
Thanks for posting this.

I have had tinnitus for 6 months!
I hear all sorts of sounds with mine, from a very high pitch squeal or ring, static, a low and sometimes high pitch hum, clicking sometimes all at the same time! I wondered also if anyone else's does this.
I always find myself grinding my teeth especially since tinnitus started because it hurts it's so loud and high pitch.
I hear it over everything! And I have no hearing loss.

I posted on here several months ago when i first got tinnitus. I went to ENT's, docotors etc said nothign was wrong with my ears. Went to physcologist and they tried me on anti depressents but they made me worse. I got bad enough i ended up ina mental health hospital wanting to kill myself to get the ringing to stop. Its very high pitched and in both ears. Its been going on for 4 months now. It makes my aniexty go bat shit crazy and its hard for me to shake it. The ringings so loud i hear it over tv, music etc.

I noticed it started shortly after i had my wisdom teeth pulled, and i started lifting weights and was doing various excersizes like shoulder shruggs. about 3 weeks after all of this i noitced a faint ringing. Didnt pay it much attention. Well it gradually got louder and louder to the point to where its all i heard and focused on it. Now its all i think about. Doctors cant help.

My shoulders and neck are always sore and tense. They ache all the time. My jaw is sore as well and clicks and pops when i open it wide. I have headaches alot. It also feels like when i clench down that my teeth dont line up like they use to. I also know when i clench my jaw that the ringing will spike while clenching. Also if i turn my neck certain ways the ringing will spike as well.

I have been to a chiropractor and he took xrays and said my spine has a curve to it right around the heart area which i could see in xray, and my neck is out of aligment, its straight instead of having a arch to it like a normal neck i could tell from the xrays as well. He did an adjustment and it felt great, but didnt do anything for the ringing, but he said it would take several adjustments to try to get everything back in line. Its hard for me to afford to keep going to know if its going to help or not.

I also have an apt to go to the dentist to have him do a xray of my jaw and check my bite to make sure its not messed up. I have done countless ours of research and from what ive read if ur spine/neck/jaw is out of alimgent, that this will cause tinnitus. I just cant afford to keep going and hate to pay for all these xrays and not even know if its going to work. Also heres a very intrestign video to watch about how ur spine connects to ur head, and if its off aligment, it can cause virtgo, tinnitus, etc which i all have

hope you're doing well OP?

Any change after the neck adjustments?
