Trip to Six Flags from the Perspective of a Tinnitus Sufferer?

My friends are talking about taking a trip to Six Flags for fright fest. I'm nervous about going due to the loud noise (will wear ear plugs if it's super loud) but my main concern is protecting my ears on the roller coasters. I used to literally go on every single ride with no worries.

Should I skip out? Not sure about wearing earplugs on a roller coaster. Just nervous if the wind would hit my ears the wrong way.

Roller coasters tend to be quite loud from the mechanical sounds, the wind noise, and the people screaming, and would fit what most folks think of as super loud. If your tinnitus is only a few months old, and you are noise induced, I would not recommend it for you- even with earplugs. You really need to protect your ears well for the first 6 mos for sure, and earplugs may simply not be enough protection for this environment.

I hate to be a downer but I have to imagine a lot of loud noise at an event like that. I would imagine people could have things like air horns or sneak up behind you and yell too. I don't think it's the best option for someone with tinnitus. I don't know how bad, or good, your tinnitus is.

30 dB earplugs combined with Peltor earmuffs and you'd probably be fine going on the rides, you'll look like a weirdo but who cares.

Earplugs often provide a false sense of security. There are many testimonies on this site like the one below:

Oh go you'll be fine they said. Wear earplugs they said.

So I went to the event with ear plugs. Was there for only a few minutes. Big mistake. Gave me low drone/hum that's worst than the high pitch hiss/eeeee, tea kettle sounds. Never went away. sigh

You have to make a decision and live with it.

I do yard work with Decibullz earplugs and Peltor earmuffs. With proper protection how is it possible to damage your hearing?

Possibly improper insertion, bone conduction and low frequency damage?

Good move, and be sure to protect from loud sounds to prevent further damage and promote healing. NIHL is irreversible, and you really only get one chance at this point to get this right.

I would not go to Six Flags, or for that matter a haunted house with your kids. Good hearing protection is basically making you deaf to your surroundings. That is dangerous. You need to be aware of whats going on around you.

There are some things in life that you just don't do anymore with Tinnitus.
