I have to find a decent job (don't we all). And soon I have an appointment at the job centre. They are obviously un-aware of the 3 months and ongoing hell that tinnitus is causing.

I don't feel strong enough to go through all the job centre stuff. Does anyone on here claim disability for tinnitus. I can understand how it affects everything.

Thanks.

Tinnitus is regarded as a disability in the UK @monkey legs, even though some people think it is not. I assure you that it is and some people are awarded disability benefit. However, certain criteria has to be met that I will not divulge in an open forum. If you want I can send you proof of what is required by the DWP (Department of Work and Pensions) in order for a person to get benefit. Please therefore, send me a PM. It is not an easy process. Simply saying to the DWP that you have tinnitus, will not get a person very far. People that are genuine and their tinnitus is debilitating, will find the DWP very understanding.

Hi Monkey Legs. Sorry to hear about the impact that tinnitus is having on your life. In terms of claiming disability for tinnitus it's important to note that although tinnitus is recognised as being in some cases a disability your chances of getting anything at all from the DWP are slim to none. Disability living allowance no longer exists in the UK. It has been replaced by PIP - Personal Independence Payments -the criteria for which is extremely stringent.

Take anything M Leigh says with a pinch of salt. His experience of claiming for this dates from a long time ago when the rules were different. His claim that those with very intrusive tinnitus will find the DWP "very understanding" is as laughable as many of his other comments on here (thanks to @attheedgeofscience for entertaining all of us recently with some of the more ludicrous Leighisms btw).

Unfortunately it's not stringent enough. My cousin is a heroin addict and he claims PIP. His friends knew how to fill in the forms, in the correct way in which to be eligible for it. He's never worked a day in his life, and probably never will.
And no you won't get disability allowance for tinnitus. I'm pretty sure of that.

This is the reason I will not divulge certain information regarding disability and tinnitus, as such information can be misused. Regarding @david c and his mention of PIP. Tinnitus and disability has nothing to do with PIP or disability living allowance.

I will not be commenting further on this matter.

I think it's important that you know some background information on this monkey legs - and that your expectations of getting benefit are not falsely raised.

Michael Leigh has regularly boasted of his expertise about this on this and on other forums in response to various forum members asking about whether you will get support from the DWP for tinnitus. It's all part of the Michael Leigh shtick which those of us who've been on these forums a while know about.

Fact. Not one single forum member who have asked for Michael Leigh's advice about this on these forums has got financial support from the DWP as a result of his advice.

The same thing will happen to you Monkey Legs. And when you find out you don't qualify for financial support - Michael Leigh will say "sorry to hear that but I guess you don't have nearly as bad tinnitus as I have".

With respect it isn't secret information. You aren't the gatekeeper of information. We have the internet lol.

The fact remains that tinnitus won't make you eligible for disability allowance or PIP etc. And rightly so. We all struggle at times. But unless you have a genuine disability that prevent it, you should work.

I guess my no nonsense approach to work comes from being self employed for the last 20 years. I have had periods when going to work is the last thing I felt like doing. During mini breakdowns, breakups, illness and tiredness, I've continued to go to work. If I hadn't I would have lost my business.
