Ear drops are not anything to worry about, as they wont go past the ear drum. If you have a tear in your ear drum or its a middle ear infection they wont prescribe drops. They will instead give oral antibiotics.
This is what they typically prescribe Cortisporin Otic Solution (neomycin and polymyxin B sulfates and hydrocortisone otic solution)
I just got done with an outer ear infection and there was no increase or problem using these drops. I have had to use them twice since i got tinnitus
Sharp ear pain, and occasional itching. Every once in a while, I also felt like something was going to drip out of my ear.
I don't have the ear pain and itching is very rare so here's hoping I'm ear infection free.
Tons of liquid behind me eardrums though.
If its due to fluid and its a Middle ear infection then they will give you Oral antibiotics. If its just fluid and no infection they will most likely give you nose sprays.
If its an middle ear infection ask for Amoxicillin Or Augmentin which is a little more potent than just amox.
If they give you nose sprays, ask for a drug called Dymista. Its basically flonase with an added allergy medication. The stuff is awesome, but its stupid expensive if you don't have good insurance.
My daughter (3 yo) used Ciprodex after her tubes surgery and when she had an ear infection. Because of the tubes, the drops reached the middle ear and felt like burning (because their pH is low).
I did some research a while back and found not scientific proof of ototoxicity for Ciprodex, but I do know that some people are very worried about it.
Thanks but I don't know if I have allergies. I've tried Zyrtec and it doesn't do anything. Stopped because it can do ear damage when I looked it up. Is Dymista still better?
You don't need to worry about Zyrtec and the other allergy pills causing ear damage. In fact, I kind of hate Tinnitus Talk due to all of the false information and people scaring other members due to Ototoxic drugs. If you think about it everything is Toxic if the dose is high enough...... anyways thats a different rant, not going to go into that LOL
So I never thought I had allergies either, but for some reason after by acoustic trauma I kept getting reoccurring ear infections and fluid behind my ear drums. I always had ear problem when I was a small child, but not for like 20 years since.
My ENT believes that I have some form of ETD, but he says it has nothing to do with the noise damage, and I find that hard to believe since I never had issues until recently.
I did get allergy tested early this year and it confirmed I have an minor allergy to almost every type of grass and pollen they tested.
If its an infection that you have the antibiotics will take care of it. If it has to do with allergies or some form of ETD then thats a different story.
2 things work for me in regards to fluid due to ETD or Allergies. One is a Mdrol pack which is a oral steroid, but I have only taken that once when it was horrible and nothing seemed to work. The other is Dymista, it usually takes care of it in a couple days. So anytime I have a flair up with fluid in my ears I grab my Dymista and it usally takes care of it. If i continue to have fluid or ear pain I make a trip to the ENT.
I almost certainly have ETD so that's part of the issue. My tubes don't drain. Even if your ETD doesn't have to do with the hearing loss, getting it under control could reduce your tinnitus. Thanks for your help by the way.
Not a problem at all. Talk to your doctor about some good nose sprays if this just turns out to be ETD, and not an infection.
