Regarding using Vicks VapoRub in the ear as your grandfather suggested is correct except you need to put VapoRub on a small cotton ball and place it just around the opening of the ear. Don't push it down in the ear.
When I was a small child and when I had severe ear aches my mother would do this remedy and it really helped with the pain and healing process.
I also have tinnitus and I just heard about doing this so I am going to try it. Believe me putting a little Vicks VapoRubon a cotton ball and placing it in the opening of the ear will not hurt you. I also saw this on a YouTube Video from a Doctor.
I am going to try it and see if there is any change, I will post a reply later regarding this if there is any change.
