Video: Stop Telling People There Is No Cure For Tinnitus

Don't buy it...there are a ton of people that are habituated and don't care...no reaction involving the central nervous system at all, yet their T is the same (didn't go away).

He obviously means well and this video not a blatant scam, but he's not entirely right.
There is a distinction between 'there is no cure' and 'there is nothing you can do'.

There is no cure for T. There is no medical procedure that can make it go away. There are many things you can do to make life more bearable such as habituation or TRT, maybe almost to the point as to where T has no influence on your life, but those will not remove the T.

If a person is missing a leg, there's a lot you could do to fill the gap: a prosthesis, a handcycle, a car with automatic transmission etc.. That's all incredibly valueable, but it is no cure. A cure would be a pill that'd make you grow a new leg.

I do not agree. I think he is very much right! Secondary tinnitus has a specific cause and can, when treated, go away. As he says in the video it has to do with your fight-and-flight reaction, which is operated from the adrenal glands. My husband has had tinnitus for about 30 years combined with cluster headaches. His life was extremely difficult until his blood pressure was so high he found a doctor who said she would not stop until she found the cause. And she did, though his cause was extremely rare and turned out to be a tumor in his adrenal gland. It was removed and he never had tinnitus nor cluster headaches ever again. Of course only a few people will have that (perhaps one in a million), but I am convinced that secondary tinnitus can be related to the adrenal glands and when you can calm them down you are close to recovery. In those thirty years my husband could turn his tinnitus off for a while by meditation (TM). The therapy Julian suggest seems to based on the same principle. Calming down your adrenal glands. Good video Julian, keep telling people never to give up hope!

Amazing story, but for the rest of us we have to face reality and so do our families. It can be extremely stressful to be told over and over that our reaction is the cause and/or the cure, and it's just your fight or flight response that is causing the problem or making things worse. It might help to reduce stress as a tinnitus sufferer, but it sure as hell can't be cured this way.

I think the video is misleading and lacks any kind of proof. I think being told by medical professionals to learn to live with it is harsh but realistic. For 99.999999% of people this is the reality...we just have to live with it.

What I am trying to say is that you first have to try to figure out if you have primary or secondary tinnitus (see the new "plain language summary" on tinnitus from the AAO-HNSF, 1st October 2014). I am not sure if it is the same as hypoacusis versus hyperacusis tinnitus but if so then research indicates that 60% of the people with tinnitis have hypoacusis tinnitus and 40% have hyperacusis tinnitus. If these 40% can figure out their specific cause then we are talking about a lot more then 1 in a million. My husband's story is just one, but I can imagine there must be more of these stories. E.g. tinnitus because of Fibromuscular Dysplasia (see www.fmdsa.org/fmd_info/what_is_fmd, FMD of the carotid arteries) can be helped. And I am sure there are more disorders that can cause tinnitus but that just never have been linked to it. Tinnitus is a symptom which can in some cases be related to a specific disorder and by curing the disorder the tinnitus can be solved too.

Now I fully understand that you will say 'and what about the 60% with hypoacusis tinnitus'? But with every day new medical technology being developed, I am sure that the hypoacusis sufferers can be helped soon as well. I just think you just should never give up hope.

Well its true. Chronic tinnitus has no cure. Sorry, but you don't get to change facts.

Very true but this doesn't mean a person with tinnitus cannot lead a fulfilling life doing everything that they want to. For some it might be easier than others but a lot can be achieved if a person is willing to try. It just takes some effort.

I won't @Gl0w0ut as I've just seen the personal attacks between you and another member and I'm not into that. I was only trying to help. I realise you will have to find your own way whatever you choose that to be but you'll hear no more from me. If I do comment on your threads it won't be to you, unless you ask me a question. I respect your views.

Take care

Look I'm sorry. The stuff between me and threefour got way out of hand. I was angry at something else and took it out in him.

I know you want to help but I feel there is no relief. Habituation to me is giving up, and all
I wantbis silence back. I haven't always been happy per se, but this condition had made my life miserable. I've never felt so depressed in my life. I spread misery because I feel there is no hope. And currently there is none.

I know how you feel and many others in this forum understand too. I've had tinnitus 21 years you've had it for considerably less. I was very depressed when first got it but gradually things improved. I can't advise you more than I already have and suggest you go to my Started threads and read the many posts there. Read the one about Marcus. It is not made up he's still a member of this forum. He was in a bad state just over a year ago and his life has turned completely around. You have to decide what you want to do with your life .

Take care

Being pissed off by the ones following your posts is a bit of surreal. You refer to a support forum, so we assume that you reach out to us in order to respond to your comments and be of some help. Look @Gl0w0ut, the young of your age in combination of this challenging condition can excuse the lack of your anger management. However this does not help you at all. In fact it directs you in taking dangerous actions that put you in great risk. I can figure this out by statements of yours like refusal of ear-plugs use just because they "make you look silly" and that mild to severe tinnitus doesn't make any difference since you are misaeable either way. Believe me there's tremendous difference between mild and severe tinnitus. But you wouldn't know that due to the subjectivness of this disorder. Our personal experience is always the worst. You said you were always unhappy so tinnitus is not your only issue, but I can relate. Having this on top of the rest of your problems can be devastating. Given the mess that you claim to deal with, you should start taking some actions and addressing few of your issues one by one, in order to find the strength to deal with this obnoxious soundtrack of your life. Nobody can tell you what to do. It takes great effort to find the best strategy that suits you. But in order to do so you should first take it a little bit easy with your anger, lower a bit your defenses and start facing your scars, so for you to accept help, and apparently you need help. We all suffer here you now. This thing is not a walk in the park. And go check your E. tubes. I believe you haven't yet exhausted all of your options and it's too soon for you to contemplate suicide. Just my 2 cents.

Don't pretend to know based on an online profile. I suppose I come here to rant more than anything else. I will settle for nothing less than a cure, and if that cannot be achieved, then I will turn to my only option for silence. No ear plugs, no masking devices, and no therapy. Those are all things that just distort the reality of the problem. My eustacian tubes appear fine. Thus that is likely not it. ENTs are worthless and I cannot imagine a tinnitus "specialist" is any better. I clearly bother people here so I will just leave the site.

No you don't bother at all. Unfortunately you didn't get my meaning. And yes you are right. I don't know you. I won't bother you again. I too suffer a lot. Really. All the wishes for relief. Bye.

Ps. Making your tinnitus much more severe won't bring you one step closer to the cure but to pure hellish torture and death.

No I get it, I just don't like asking for help. I'm seeing a psychiatrist already and am taking medication right now. I guess he idea is if I an fake happiness long enough I might actually think life can be good despite tinnitus.

I will say what I wish I was told when I first got tinnitus and become addicted to this site.

1. Staying here won't help your tinnitus, in fact I believe it makes it worse because being here is essentially giving tinnitus power and ensuring you're focusing your attention towards it. In the few threads I read, I will keep telling new members "get off this site ASAP". I know they will understand why I said that 12 months from now.

2. Only read the success stories sections. There is some amazing stories there of hope which will make sense to you the longer you have this condition.

When someone says they had tinnitus for twenty years and now they dont have it and then they refer you to their book, Im afraid I am a bit sceptical. From what I have read his tinnitus was started by stress, not noise-induced. Perhaps where there is no noise trauma, and hence no physical damage to the hearing mechanism, then the possibility of tinnitus going away may be greater. Noise trauma causes irreversible damage to the inner ear hair cells. The effects of stress on hearing may be reversible.
