Hey guys,

I need some advice. I have tinnitus for 9 days now and after the first two days I started waking up in the middle of the night to my tinnitus. Since I only get about 3 to 4 hours a sleep every night, this is seriously starting to affect my life. Funny thing is, that during the day it really does not bother me, I also can fall asleep using a natural masker every night.

Does anyone has or had a similar experience and happens to know some remedies?

Cheers,

Pip

Hi Pipo, does the T wake you up, or when you awaken in the middle of the night the T is there. I am asking this because you may have something on your mind you are worried about waking you up.

I think the T is making me wake up. I never used to wake up at night before. I thought it might be related with me grinding my teeth, but I'm using a mouth guard, still it wakes me up. the volume of the rain or white noise i use (that is either higher than the T or about the same volume) does not seem to change anything, I still wake up.

Most of us with tinnitus have gone through a lot of sleep problems, especially in the early days of the T. My doctor did prescribe both Ambien and Xanax for me, but I decided not to take them, as I was concerned about the side effects of prescription drugs.

Some natural alternatives you could consider are melatonin, valerian root, holy basil, or chamomile tea. It helps to take something to relax you about an hour before bedtime, so that you have time to wind down before sleep. Another relaxing supplement is magnesium. Four years later, I'm still taking magnesium chloride tablets most nights. It really does seem to help.

Whatever you decide to do, I wish you well, and we're glad you joined us here at Tinnitus Talk!

Is that mouth guard store bought or from a dentist? Could be a big difference. I clench my teeth, which guards don't help. After I started with tinnitus, I woke up a few times with teeth clenched, and once with a ridiculously painful cramp in my calf.

Get to a TMJ specialist, is my advice. You may still have time to correct your bite and get right of the noise. I came on here tonight to recommend a dentist, so here goes. He's a long way from Vancouver, but gets patients from all over: https://www.youtube.com/channel/UCPoIDjjCFzKZbvQnX3BYlJw

Almost everybody is awake at night. Most of the time we fall back a sleep so fast that is simply does not register at all! The only difference for you is....the tinnitus is alarming enough to fully wake you.

You need to lose any fear for wake-up at night. Even (my own experience) while waking up 2 to 3 times a night I could still get a decent nights rest (after I lost most of the anxiety).

You will need to accept that this is probably going to take some time before you start sleeping full nights again, but it will happen. I took me about 6 month to go from hardly any sleep to nice 8 hours "stints". The only "help" I got is melatonin. 5mg per night the first 3 weeks (reduced dosage because of very vivid dreams).

I wake up after 3 hours, check the clock.. oh shit, only 3 hours?... then go back to sleep and wake up a couple more times. Sometimes it takes an hour to sleep again, sometimes 5 minutes. I have bruxism but I don't consider that related.

Little known fact: those with a particular variant of the gene BHLHE41 need only 5 to 6 hours of sleep. That's 5 in 100 people. Lucky them. Scientists are of course, trying to reproduce the effects of that gene to produce a drug that let the general population live 2 hours more per day.

Just to inform , that in my life I have never slept the whole night and I have only had T for 9 months. I wake up (normally twice), I go t kitchen, eat or drink something (I know sounds stupid), then I go bag to bed. This used to annoy me, but no I don't care. It is my "normal" thing and I have always done that, Why should it bother me. I Don't have to eat so much at breakfast then ;). My point is, try to relax, when you wake up.Try not to care! Just be awake for a while without any feelings....Don't worry about it right now. With the T it was first scary, I even went out to smoke :android:. I was so nervous, but then with time it got better. With the melatonin I only wake up once which is less than before T.

Hi Karen I have been suffering with Tinnitus now for 6months. I am having a very hard time getting any sleep. I prefer not to take a prescription drugs just like you and I would like to know how much magnesium you take to help you sleep. I bought some Valerian root tea but it smells so bad that I threwn it out. Cham. Tea doesn't help. I am taking 5g of meatonin every night but still wake up every hour. So every exhausted but I don't want to give into taking addictive drugs. Help me if you can. Thank you.

Hi, @Teresa1958,

It is really hard to get to sleep when you have tinnitus, that's for sure! I take two magnesium chloride tablets at night, about 1 hour before bedtime. Each tablet is 520 mg., so that's a total of 1,040 mg. For me, at least, this type of magnesium doesn't cause bowel problems. I order this supplement online (Alta Magnesium Chloride), usually through Amazon.

I hope that this, or something else, works for you.

Good luck, and I hope you are able to get some sleep soon!

Best wishes,
Karen

I would try Karen's advice first as she is very knowledgeable. :) Magnesium helps a lot of people and it's quieting to the brain.

About your melatonin, is it sustained release? If not, then the supplement will wear off quickly--in a few hours--and you will be up again. Sustained release eliminates this problem and should give you at least 6-7 hours of uninterrupted sleep.
