This is something that's been happening to me for the last 4-5 days.

I wake up in the morning to silence, then after 10-15 seconds, the T kicks in and slowly builds in volume.

I've been taking Benadryl to help me sleep. Is this just a side effect of the Benadryl? Or is this a sign of healing? Or???

I wish there was a FAQ for these types of questions.

Thank you!

Something of that kind happens to me as well.
My idea is that when we sleep the body kind of "turn off" the senses, we don't stop hearing completely, obviously, but the signal only reaches the 'alarm' regions of the brain and is not fed into the parts where we consciously perceive it.
This is only a layman's speculation, though.

Anyway, I've always been a sleepyhead, now I love sleeping even more :)

Sometimes when I wake up I've not realised my tinnitus. Then I realise I've not noticed it. Then it builds, and then it's there all day.

May be because it's quiet when we wake up and that's when T kicks in more - same thing happens to me because I have always liked to sit quietly at sunup with a coffee to start the day - so I've made it a habit to plug in a radio with earphones or mp3 with quiet masking in those quiet times, then I can ignore T. Mightn't be as quiet any more but I can still hear the birds and for me it's better and more relaxing than listening to T ramping up.

I believe it has to do with glutamate levels. When we sleep they're very low. Once we wake, these levels rapidly rise.

Last night I woke up and could not hear my T for a minute.
http://www.tinnitus.org/tinnitus.html:
"During sleep, the conscious part of the brain is 'shut down' so we don't hear, see or feel anything."
So if you can put T from the conscious part back into the subconscious part, you have won.

I'm guessing that's what they try to do with the realtime MRI... Show you where you tinnitus is, and then you try to move it... i'm ready to play that video game!

Mines been going for a few weeks and at least once to twice a week it is gone the first 20 mins I wake up. Seems this is a common thing. Mine is quieter in the morning and gets louder through the day as well. Usually peaks at around 2-3pm.

This happens to me too. My doctor said it's because recent studies are showing that tinnitus might be created by the brain and not in the ears. The brain is funny thing - sometimes I don't see all colors when I first wake up and then they slowly "turn on".
