Fuck this film!! It was freaking loud (sorry for the rant).
But amen to this thread, I forgot to post about this movie...
I went on Saturday to see it, and I had my earplugs with me and I just had to leave,
30 minutes was just enough for my poor ears!! so freaking loud, plus the movie was soo bad
It's loud noise fest, I rarely go to the movies and when I go.. well I usually see comedies, dramas or adventures.
but this movie was insane, I had to leave my friend watch the whole thing alone.

on the good side, I went to shop clothes while he was watching that snooze fest.
DON'T GO SEE THIS MOVIE. it sucks and it's freaking loud.
I think I still have a spike from this, I don't know anymore...

Sorry to hear that you had the same encounter as me with this movie
I lastef about an hour (wanted to leave earlier than that) mostly due to that it shifted from loud to quiet and back and forth until the action started and my anxiety was hitting the roof like crazy.

Hope you feel better soon and that your spike settles soon. I think mine spiked a few days but it didnt seem to have caused any further harm (hopefully).

I did see "Dunkirk" (and really liked it, by the way. The cinematography is amazing). I did not think it was any louder than your average Marvel comic flick (I also saw "Guardians of the Galaxy Vol 2" this summer) or any other action film. I wore my earplugs, as always, and had no problem.

But each person is different and this is just my opinion. If movie noise concerns you, I would stay away from all action films.

PS: The loudest thing in the movieplex these days is the trailers. Don't know why. This has been discussed on TT before. I often get my seat, then ask a friend to hold my place and leave during the trailers, coming back when the film starts.

Trailers are crazy loud! I asked once and an employee at the theater told me because they are trying to get everyone's attention and something about it's required by the production companies. They think if the trailer is louder, we will pay more attention and remember it.

Every movie in a theater is basically too loud. They should be sued w/ a class action lawsuit for the damages they're subjecting to people. Why on earth they think they possess a right to push out 100db I'll never understand. This crap won't stop until lawsuits occur.

Not sure why this movie was the worst of all movies I've seen to be honest. And I always watch action movies in the cinemas and never had a problem with the noise level when using my plugs. This time it felt like I had just put some paper tissues in my ears that did nothing for me.
Since even reviewers complained about the loudness it seems there is something that is tickeling some of us off. Anyway, everybody is different as you said but I would still advise to wait and see this movie at home to be honest.

Just visited my parents and my mother said they just saw Dunkirk. I asked her if it was loud ... she said they covered their ears the whole time! It's just crazy that this is permitted. I would have warned them if I'd known they were going.

Since it was filmed in 70mm it will look amazing in 4K and this without the crazy noise, comfortably at home with a good glass of wine

Same here but with a 55" samsung 4k. I haven't invested in 4k blu ray but i guess i should do at some stage.

I payed $4k - OLED gives the best image quality especially in a dark room. The image is so vivid that I forget about my T most of the times

I love movies, and Dunkirk is one of the very few new films that I really want to go and see but because of three horrible experiences with insanely loud volume while watchin Lord of the Rings: Two Towers (twice) and Terminator 3: Rise of the Machines, all in 2003, I have stayed away from the cinemas ever since, as those visits was a complete nightmare.

And stupid me ended up sitting through them all.
Well I paid for them, and I really wanted to see them, specially T3, but I had not expected to have my ears being almost blown to pieces.
I could not believe how loud it was. Every time someone clashed a sword against another in Two Towers or a shoot was fired in T3, it felt like the whole damn universe was about to explode inside my head.

My mum saw the last Bond film back in 2015, and she told me later on that several people left the cinema only after a few minutes because of the loud volume, and the same story I was told by my kid brother when he saw the latest Batman picture in 2016.
I am not saying that every film is that painfully loud, but by the looks of it I will probably be waiting for Dunkirk to come out on DVD/Blu-ray, and see it for myself with a volume/sound that do not destroy the movie experience.

I'm so upset I watched this film. I got caught out. I've been careful with my ears since getting tinnitus in my right ear from a rock concert in 1985. Habituated to it. Wear earplugs wherever there is loud music. Usually things are okay in the cinema but this film went way above anything previously experienced. Since watching the film two weeks ago I have developed tinnitus in my good left ear and can't use the phone without getting a headache. The headache is in a particular spot and there are other symptoms too. I'm going to have to pay serious cash to see a private ENT consultant to get an idea of the damage as I'm too worried about it to wait for an NHS appointment. Fair enough if Christopher Nolan wants to make a loud, true to life, film, and that's part of the art, but why not put up a warning at the start of the film for those people who have sensitive hearing? I'm beating myself up for not leaving or having done my research beforehand, but hearing loss, damage, tinnitus and whatever else is such a serious issue that cinemas have a moral responsibility to protect their clients, don't they?

I wish I read this before I saw this, I woke up this morning with a new tone in my ears. I wore ear protection but it was only 10 NRR I thought it was more but I didn't have red filters in that gave more protection.

Just an update, the tone went away. It may have been related to the weather. It was raining last night and I woke up to a huge thunderbolt it sounded like an explosion. I took Afrin, Magnesium and vitamins. Thankfully it's gone. The movie had a lot of bass, my ear plugs helped with the high frequencies.

I wish that I had seen something about this sooner. I saw Dunkirk in a non-IMAX theater on 8/26 and got an acoustic trauma in my left ear. Now, 11 days later, my ears are still ringing so loud it's been keeping me up at night. Even Prednisone didn't help me. There needs to be legislation against this level of volume in theaters.

What's even worse is that I couldn't even find any complaints about the volume by looking through most reviews.
